Aerating, Overseeding and Preemergent
Good Afternoon,
I just bought a house and would like the yard to look nicer. The back is nice but the front is experiencing some crab grass and patchiness issues. I was hoping I could aerate and overseed this fall and then preemergent next spring when the soil temp is 55-60 for a few days. Will the grass I plant in fall be affected by the preemergent next spring?
Thank you,
Roland

Re: Aerating, Overseeding and Preemergent
No it won't be affected. For your zone mid August is the best time to grow seeds. This gives it enough time to develop roots before winter.

Pre emergent effects seeds and seedlings, anything out of that stage will remain unaffected.

Re: Aerating, Overseeding and Preemergent
You might want to post some pics of the lawn or areas in question. Since your profile shows KBG as your grass type, you might be better off looking over the fall nitrogen regiment post to encourage your KBG to spread instead of overseeding.

Also mechanical aeration is not the preferred method around here unless you have some sever compaction, might want to take a look at the BLSC article for some info on non mechanical aeration.

And not overseeding would allow you to put down a preemergent this fall if that is the way that you go.

Re: Aerating, Overseeding and Preemergent
Depending on timing - laying down a Pre_M like Prodiamine 65 = sixty days after seed down is ok.
Of course, doing the Nitrogen fall regimen will also be possible with teh Seeding & Pre_M - just will be hectic!

Re: Aerating, Overseeding and Preemergent
Patchiness? How patchy? Like spots smaller than a volleyball?
You have KBG - why not undertake cultivation techniques to help it fill in?
See any big bare spots, top dress - water regularly.
Put a pre-emergent down now at half annual rate (skip seeded spots)
Apply regularly, light doses of fast release Nitrogen from Labor Day through first frost and water it in.
Irrigate properly.
Take on the existing weeds with post emergent herbicides (read the triangle approach)
Keep up with mowing, as this helps KBG spread.
You'll be amazed what KBG will do with the right cultivation and feeding.
