Advice on this Plan

Post by ctrav » August 21st, 2018, 2:16 pm

Im thinking of doing the following:

NOW
Cutting grass back from 2" to 1 1/2"
Applying Celsius WG for the few weeds that have popped up
Applying Cross Check for the Chinch bugs

NEXT DAY
Deep watering
Aerating

NEXT WEEK
Cut grass at 1 1/2"
Apply Urea 46-0-0 (was considering 21-0-0 since my lawn needs the sulfur for high pH)

End of September to early October I will apply pre m and then again in the spring. This will be the first year applying pre m due to new lawn. Just mailed off soil test but those results will help to formulate a game plan for next year.

Im not tied to any of this (except for bug issue) so if there are differing opinions Im all ears....Thanks!

Could you please tell a little about your goals for the lawn, and what, if any problems you are having with it?

Thanks!

Thanks for asking - Brown spots, bugs like crazy (in one area thus far), grass never really greens up at least not like I see on pics here. Wanting to learn to get my soil healthier with a nice green lawn for my grandkids and the family to enjoy.

Soil sample was sent off today and here is a link to my first post with more details...

I have two concerns. The first is that you already applied fertilizer last week, "50# bag of 18-46-0 on 7k". That's a little over a pound of N per 1,000. The recommendation is 1 lb/K a month. Bermuda can take excess nitrogen, but you'll be needing to mow something like every other day to keep it in check. You might want to wait on the additional fertilizer.

Second, the general advice for N.Texas is to apply fall pre-emergent in early to mid-September.

Got it on the pre-emergent. I certainly made a mistake on the fert so I will wait. Would it be ok to apply the 46-0-0 mid September or just keep it for next year since the pre-emergent will have some N?

This is why Im here to avoid mistakes so thank you...

What pre-emergent are you applying?

Depending on how much N is in the pre-em, you can apply 46-0-0 in mid-Sept. Just cut back on the rate of 46-0-0, so that the total of the two is about 1 lb N/K.

Lesco 0-0-7 was the plan for this fall (open to other suggestions)l. Once again I was wrong in thinking it would have N...silly me! The spring pre-emergent has N! So going with the 46-0-0 will work just dont go over 1 lb per k...correct?

The Lesco 0-0-7 should be fine. Correct on the 46-0-0, aim for 1 lb N/K.

The Sept application will be the last fertilization of the year, since the grass will start going dormant in Oct.

Got and thanks GP...now if I can come up with a plan for my "water runoff" since going to 1 inch of water once a week! I posted about it under the topic water runoff if you have a chance to take a peak at that issue...
