A couple of snow on the ground questions

Post by bpgreen » December 6th, 2022, 1:48 am

I've got a few inches of snow on the ground and I've got a couple of questions.

Can I spread Humic DG on top of the snow (more snow will follow) and let it go into the soil in the spring?

In the past, I've done dormant seeding by strewing seed before the first major snow. Can I spread seed on top of this snow, knowing that I'll see more snow? Or should I hope for a warm spell and spread seed when there's some bare earth?

I don't have the option of more traditional seeding because I'm not allowed to water my lawn.

Theoretically, Yes. If the area is level/flat, you should be able to put it down and it should work when then snow melts. There is no change that will occur to the Humic Acid. The only risk is that it may migrate if the area is at at steep angle and you get Spring rains while the ground is still mostly frozen.

This is theoretically OK - I've not tested this answer.

Thanks.

Some of the snow has melted (especially in the areas that have the least grass). We're supposed to have a few more days above freezing so maybe I'll wait and see if a little more melts.

Either way, I'll spread some humic acid and seeds in the next few days. I don't expect great germination from the dormant seedling, but it's pretty much my only option.

The forecast changed and included 1-4 inches of snow this afternoon to tomorrow morning.

So I put down seed especially in the bare areas.

I'll probably spread humic acid in the next few days.

I'm sort of wondering if it wouldn't wash off frozen ground and head for the hills...or rivers...but hey, it might be worth a shot.

Hence my qualification about "if the area is flat/level".

My lawn is pretty flat. I got the seeds down and most of the snow melted, but didn't get around to the humic acid.

We've since gotten a lot of snow. Even though the lawn is flat, with this much snow, depending on how it melts, there could still be a lot od runoff, so I think I'll hold off until spring.

That makes sense. Even flat areas have a runoff zone. In my case, eventually into the very slightly pitched swale.
