Looks great! And thanks for posting pics of the good and bad areas. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one with problem areas.

Are there any sprouts over there in that side area? I had some pretty bare spots like that (I still do, actually), but there were definitely some areas that germinated way later than others. Like 7-10 days later.

I think it's coming along quite nicely, though! I'm looking forward to your 28 day pics!

Looks dry, and in a sunny spot. Do you topdress with, say, peat moss?

We did with mushroom compost. There is a lot of dead grass there, wouldn't that act sort of like a topdressing?

Has the area in the above pic gotten more germination? I didn't think it was bad for temps in the 80s and expect it is more filled this being a week later.

Yes, some. I think it will be ok now that I increased the water. That may have been part of the problem. It will just lag behind the rest.

Another question, on my soil test my "P" & "K" were high, can I just do a light dose of urea? If so, I'm going into week 4, will now be the right time?

Urea is what I did since my P was so high off the charts and K was pretty high also.

Last year for my reno, I did 0.5 Lb/1000 sq ft of urea every 2 weeks.

Re: A Lawn Renovation in SD - 1 month picture update

Hi everyone, here is my 1 month update. I'll give you the best first. This is the back yard, not too many problem here.
Image

This is one side of the front. We had some strong winds so lots of leaves. Do you think I should mow? Dear hubby told me I could buy myself a reel mower, but with all the leaves & twigs, I don't know if I'll be able to use it much this fall. I'm not looking forward to driving on it with our garden tractor either.

This is the back again only from the opposite direction.

Ok, now this where I eat humble pie. I've put more seed down on these spots and have been hand watering because I set the irrigation to go every other day. That spot does get hit by 2 zones, I wonder if the sparrows feasted on the seed. They like to sit in that spruce tree. There is grass there, but thin.
Image

Have done pretty much the same here. Put down more seed and hand water 2x day depending on weather. It's coming, but is gonna be way behind. I have to blame myself here. The problem was I used a drop spreader to sow the grass seed, so I wouldn't be flinging it into the street. Well, obviously it wasn't on a high enough setting. There are also a few places where I didn't get up enough of the dead grass, therefore, poor seed to soil contact.

This is the same side only opposite direction.

General public impression.

If you haven't been able to tell already, I love looking at renovation pics! It looks like it's coming along pretty well other than it being a little thin in a few spots? Have the seedlings sprouted where you've reseeded yet? You didn't mention when the seeds got dropped? If they don't come in and get established before the first hard frost, you can always dormant seed those areas if you don't want to wait for him to fill in.

I think that normally mowing when the grass reaches 2.5" is good. Trimming off those tips is supposed to promote tillering. For my renovation, I had a few spots that were that tall, but most of the stuff was much shorter.

I hope that it continues to go well! Don't feel bad. You have less "humble pie" areas than I do! I hope you guys are having better weather than we are just East of you. We're already down to low 50s during the day and just around 40 degrees at night. Winter is right around the corner... :(

PS. That's the first shot of the entire house that I think I've seen. I don't know what you have to be jealous about. It's a great looking piece of property!

Thank you for the kind words Drinyth, I actually reseeded those spots twice. About 14 & 7 days ago. I'm seeing some sprouts from the reseeding 2wks ago. It's been cool here too. Today was high of 52. I think we'll see an Indian summer tho', we usually do after a hard frost. We have a chance of rain for the rest of the week. I have plenty of seed left to dormant seed those areas if I have too. Have you mowed yet Drinyth? I love looking a comparing pictures also!

I like it. You're coming along. Like me, you're probably wondering whether you can wait until Spring to help it fill in the bare spots. March seems SOOOOOOOOO far away.

An Indian summer would be nice! I'm not holding my breath, though.

I mowed those areas where the grass was a little longer, but I didn't have too much. Just a few passes with the push (rotary) mower to trim the tallest of stuff down to 2". It took all of about 5 minutes. :)

Hopefully, I'll be able to take week 5 pictures tomorrow. It's been raining all day here, though... enough to put a small lake in the backyard. :( And it's supposed to rain here tomorrow and Saturday morning as well. If it subsides enough (and the lake disappears), I'll snap some pictures tomorrow and throw them up in my renovation thread.
