Renovation in IN

Post by nothing0 » September 17th, 2009, 10:57 pm

I have a renovation thread over at LS but I thought it was time to start a thread here since Bestlawn picked out the seed and Andy made the recommendations on the soil. I appreciate the help everyone has given me.

Someone else mentioned that they didn't live in as nice of a neighborhood as most that post here.. I don't either, but hopefully I will have a nice patch of grass.

So here it is...
Day 3 Morning. I wish I had put more peat down.

The weeds are frustrating but there's nothing I can do.

Yeah, the weeds kind of ruin the picture in your head, don't they?

Keep the chin up, this should be a big week coming up. Keep it up!

You will have nice grass and much nicer than over the river in Henderson!
I like Evansville - been to Whirlpool and its employee's homes many times!

Your weeds are tiny. Mine at the north side are like 5-6" wide now. I'm shy to post it. LOL. You will notice that I only post the pics. It's irritating. That' why I've been praying that tomorrow will be Oct 15 since this is kinda our average frost. Most annual weeds will get killed by hard frost.

By the way, I love your first picture! The soil is totally exposed. :) That's what I did too!
Looks like your weeds are common mallows but it's too small in picture.

I forgot to tell you the name of the weeds I have in my new lawn and that they've been id'd. I have the following right now.

1. common mallow (id'd yesterday)
2. prickly lettuce (id'd yesterday)
3. velvet leaves( id'd yesterday)
4. spurge (id'd yesterday)
5. lamb's quarter
5. crabgrass
6. burdock
7. Purslane
8. Coreopsis Tinctoria. A beautiful annual plant. I accidentally drop thousands of seeds in the new lawn when I pulled it :( It is so thick and they're now 3" tall.

It's terrible that Whirlpool is moving the Evansville plant to Mexico. Over 1200 employees. Its been here as long as I remember.
But yeah, I like the area and it is better than across the river. :)

I have Crabgrass, Henbit, and I think you are right about the common mallow. Oh and more Crabgrass.

Hmmm, didn't know that. What brought me to Evansville and Henderson was the transferring on the Benton Harbor Mi. employees in the Maytag acquisition. God, that was a rough couple weeks doing that.

Sad for many - uprooted from MI to IN and now Mexico or nothing. [I aint going to Mexico (with their cars) this transfer!]

I think 9.13 was the last pic I posted. So since the boards seem to be dead here are some updates..

So 9.17.. goosegrass filling in very nice-

Image

9.26 I wanted to Round up the whole thing.

Image

Gary and Simpson talked me down off the ledge.. I ordered some Drive to take care of the Crabgrass. I then figured out that half of it was goosegrass. The Drive (quinclorac) didn't do any damage to the turf FWIW. I had some areas that I just put seeds down a few days before so that was an interesting find.
http://www.gcsaa.org/gcm/2001/jun01/06seedling.html (Link that Gary sent me.)

10.6.9

The best area I could take a picture of.

Image

10.11.9

Image

My salad bar...

Image :banghead:

You can see in the pic above that the drive killed a lot of weeds.

10.18.9

Image

Salad bar is still there. Now its mainly clover and goosegrass.

Image

10.23.9

I know its not perfect, but at least its green. I no longer have the round up on stand by. I sprayed a couple of test spots today with WBG. We will see how that goes.

Patience is a virtue that I don't have, but what choice do I have? ;)

Clover is easy. Get the goosegrass with fenoxaprop or MSMA. Goosegrass is a summer annual.

Thanks for the help and kind words.

We are going to battle this one out till the end. Yes sir and win. :)

I already have fenoxaprop (bayer brand) ready to go. Everything I read about fenoxaprop says to wait until the grass is established. I didn't want to risk it this fall. I was kinda surprised to see the goosegrass yellowing after a very light frost. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, but I thought it would take a hard freeze to kill grassy annuals.

Just wait till spring. I told you what was going on with mine. I wish i would have waited. You are looking great at this point. It can only get better now that the weeds are going down. Do you have any plans for the front yard? It looked great after you seeded last year but is it holding up?

Next spring hit it with a preemergent early and then in may hit it with two hose end sprayer apps of spectracide with crabgrass killer and the goosegrass will be long gone. Just don't dig around to much anymore or you'll get invasion again

Goosegrass doesn't even like light frosts. It will be dead sooner than later, but will leave behind millions of seeds

How long will those little guys live? Good advice on the pre-em. Will do.

Haha. A renovation next year for the front is tempting. It looked fine until August. Something hit it hard. I'm still not sure if it was fungal or grubs. It looks better now, so I will have to wait and see what happens.
