Weeds in new KBG lawn

Post by Dave » October 6th, 2009, 9:50 am

Well the new KBG lawn is coming in nicely and so are some weeds. My old lawn was completely weedless except for a small area that had some nutgrass. I have some Sedgehammer and will use it on the nutgrass in late June when it comes back. There is also some crabgrass growing but it should die shortly and I will apply Halts in late March to take care of that issue. I also see some clover and chickweed. When is a good time to apply that on a new lawn?

I also have these 2. What are they?

The first two look like Purslane.

That's what I came up with. I really don't know what the second one is.

I think Andy's right on the purlsane. I don't know what the other one is.

You should be able to kill both with a broadleaf weed killer like 2,4D. Don't use any weed killers on a new lawn until you've mowed it three times.

I had both of those, I think the second one died after it had been cut a few times. The first one died a quick death after I hit it with WBG. Have you had your first cut yet? Should be soon.

Looks like the other weed is epilobium ciliatum.

Could be. I have not cut the lawn yet. Would it be better to wait until next year to take care of these or will that just cause more weeds?

I think the first one is purslane, and the second one is pokeweed (seedling).

I'm on day 50+ something. I have mowed it 3 times but I'm definitely sure that some aren't being mowed yet since they're still short. To cut it short, :D, I won't risk any seedling this year with weed killers. I'll let nature kill them then pre-M them in spring, then 2-4d the ones who will endure the pre-M.

I put my WBG done on August 25th (seeded on June 20th) with no ill effect.

At this point you might want to let them be, just hand pull the ones that are really bothering you.

Winter will kill a lot of them and WBG will nail them in late April.

That being said if you have really good sun and you get 3 good cuts in then zapping them with WBG in mid-late November will kill them as they'll be sucking down nutrients like the regular grass at that time of year. We probably have at least 5 more weeks of top growth on Long Island.

I will get one possibly two cuts max before Thanksgiving. I think I will use a small brush and dip it in RU to brush on the larger weeds. The crabgrass and chickweed I will deal with next year.
