Rust on new KBG Lawn, Day 50, should I be concerned?

Hi all,

I have had good success so far with my KBG (Blue Velvet, Bedazzled, Moonlight, Midnight). I am at day 50 and noticed some yellowing in spots. Upon some research, it appears to be rust, that has spread quite a bit (partially my fault, I mulch mowed and it spread). I sprayed Immunox yesterday. Is this something I should be concerned with? When will the Immunox take effect? Are there any other remedies? I just don't want to lose my young lawn to fungus. It has been a wet fall in SE Mass, but I have shut down the sprinklers and trying to dry it up. Any advice appreciated. Thank you

What are you mowing at? Take a paper towel and rub the blade if it turns orange you have rust. If not i would think you have leaf spot from turf not drying out. Please post pictures.

When was the last time you fertilized?

FERT with Lesco 21-5-? Organic base was last week, but got heavy rain afterwards. I will post pics tomorrow PM

You know it's rust if the dust/spores rub off onto something. Try using a paper towel to wipe it and see what happens.

I never heard of using fungicide for rust since it's easily remedied with nitrogen application. I'm not exactly sure what "organic base" means, but organics can take up to three weeks to begin working. Does it mean nitrogen is supplied from organic source? Or some organic and some synthetic? Not really sure if nitrogen from organic sources will affect the rust since the process and effect of converting to nitrogen is different from that of synthetic sources. The reason I find it questionable is I don't believe the grass would have developed rust had a synthetic source of nitrogen been applied. May have to wait for the organics to take affect, and let's see what the immunox does. You notice any affect yet?

went over to the Lesco site and found this--

"20-1-5 25%ppscu 50% Org Base"

so it's 20-1-5 of which 25% is ppscu coated and 50% is Org Base. now, wonder of wonders, Lesco actually has info for this product--

Yes, thats the one. Thought it was decent for $11 per 40lb bag. any Idea if my rust/leaf spot (pictures may be tough tonite, raining AGAIN!) is a concern?

So 50% is organic source and 50% is time-released. Pretty decent and not bad for the price but just can't supply nitrogen in the time frame that you need it to combat rust expediently. You can't undo what's been done, but I think the grass will be okay in the next couple weeks and with the addition of fungicide. The only thing is you really need to know if it is in fact rust. Do the towel test. If no spores rub off, then it's not rust and could be something else. Could be red thread, which is more likely during cool temps than rust.

Thank you, definitely not thread, I 've batteled that on existing lawn and know what that definitley lloks like. I will try and get some pics up tonite. Sounds like I may be puting down more fert? will it harm the younf KBG?

That's the thing, you can't put down more fert. Not until it's time to fertilize again.
