Help with Fall plan

Post by legacy2000 » November 14th, 2014, 3:20 pm

Hello,

I purchased a bag of Urea 46-0-0 today and not sure how to apply it. I actually never knew Urea existed until yesterday, otherwise I would have followed Andy’s plan that he outlined back in September.

Here is what I applied so far this fall to my PRG lawn:

* September 1st: Lesco Starter (18-24-12): 3 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. (reseeded lawn)

* September 15th Milorganite 22 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft.

* September 30th Milorganite 22 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft.

Should I now apply Urea? If so is 2 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. the correct amount? I live in CT.

Thanks.

I'm no expert but I believe yes, you should be applying 2lbs p 1,000sqft. I'm going to be putting mine down and watering in tomorrow afternoon.

The only real way to answer your question is with another question...

The key question to determine when you should apply urea as a winterizer is whether or not your grass is still growing. If your lawn is still growing, then it is NOT yet time. Wait a week and consider again.

In other words...

Is your grass still growing? If yes, then wait on the urea application.

Has your grass stopped growing? (If you get your mower out at the same height as your prior mowing at least 7 days prior, and you can't tell any difference in grass height between where the mower has been and where it hasn't then it has stopped growing.) If yes, the grass has stopped growing, then it is time to apply the urea winterizer.

When the time comes, the preferred amount is 1 pound of nitrogen for 1000 square feet. For urea (46-0-0), 2 pounds per 1000 square feet is close enough.

I saw this on another thread, so remember that it is 2 pounds of urea per 1000 square feet, assuming you have a 46-0-0 product. In any case, the amount of nitrogen per 1000 square feet is ONE pound.

Ken-n-Nancy beat me to it. Wish I knew how to delete a post!

To check for growth you could also put your bag on your mower.......no clippings it's time to make the drop
