Best Dandelion herbicide for early/mid Spring?

Post by Green » April 26th, 2016, 7:31 pm

What's the best selective herbicide to use now in early/mid Spring to spot-spray dandelions? I have a bunch of different things available. Is 2,4-D or Triclopyr better this time of year for dandelions?

2,4-D for dandelions. Triclopyr for clover.

I know you said selective, but I've had a ton of luck with weed b gon or spectracide weed stop, both do well killing any stray dandelions quickly.

Now, doesn't Triclopyr work well on Dandelions in the Fall? Or am I incorrect on that?

You are incorrect on that.

Dandelions are so easy to kill(maybe the easiest) that I'm surprised this thread is still going. Any 2,4-D or 3-way product should be damned close to 100% kills on dandelions. Blindfolded. In the dark. One hand behind your back. Drunk. Even if you're HLG.

It's true. Even I can kill it with anything.

I had a bunch of dandys. Two blanket sprays of 24D 3 weeks apart killed them. And I have a 5000 square ft dandelion farm my neighbor doesn't treat that is upwind.

My wife actually thought it was snowing the other day when it was windy until I told her it was the dandelion farm next door.

Do you recommend using any adjuvants, when applying to KBG?

I used Speedzone on my NoMix lawn last May with a 80/20 surfactant. It was lights out for weeds after a blanket spray. No discoloration seen. Follow up spot sprays at full label rate did show some burning, but it bounced back.

What rate was used for the initial application? Were the spot sprays becuase of new weeds?

I went with 1.75oz/K. Maximum label rate is 1.8oz/K for cool season. Spot sprays were new stuff that popped up. I didn't have a pre-emergent down last year.

Here's another +1 for Speedzone: http://www.lawnsite.com/threads/herbici ... ns.454447/

Five herbicides were tested on dandelions. After 6 day, I thought Speedzone was the most effective. T-Zone and Surge were almost as effective. Confront and a 3-way were slightly less effective.
It seemed odd, that T-Zone looked to be superior to T-Zone plus a wetting agent, (TZW).

I question the use of an adjuvant with T-Zone, in that test.

My el-cheapo 24D SMOKED my dandelions.

Some of the more expensive products show damage earlier. It took several weeks for my dandelions to turn brown / black. But then POOF. Gone. Smoked em.

My wallet is smiling. It cost me a whole $5 in herbicide to eliminate 98% of the broadleafs on 1.4 acres of turf.
