Mowing after rain
After over a week of not being cut (I was away) and lots of rain, my yard is totally overgrown. I measured a few parts last night that were over 6"! There is no rain in the forecast today but more coming until it clears Sunday-Monday. I don't have much standing water, it's just damp. I also just changed my blade before last cut.
If I come home today and the lawn is still a bit damp is it that much of a problem to mow? I'd like to stay as close to the 1/3 rule as possible but if I wait until the yard is totally dried out I'll have parts that are 8" or more. As it stands, I'll have to raise HOC to 4" and then back down to 3" over the weekend.

I was in the same boat so, I mowed part of my lawn yesterday while it was damp. Had to bag because it was just too difficult to mulch. Wasn't too bad though.

Re: Mowing after rain
I don't think that would be a problem. Mine was damp when I mowed last night. I just mowed four days ago too. I did use the leaf blower over the entire yard to break up the clumps. What a pain.

I love the looks I get from the neighbors when I have to take the leaf blower to the lawn.

It won't hurt the turf unless you take off too much of the top growth. Mowing wet grass is a pain, though, as it tends to clog the mower and clump up on the lawn. You have to do what you can, though.

Re: Mowing after rain
I took the hit and mowed it, knowing full well it would lay over and clump. I think that's better than the alternative of waiting another few days hoping it will dry up...
In a couple of weeks it will fully recover.

Re: Mowing after rain
If it is laying over, I would hit it with a leaf blower to stand it up. Matted grass is asking for problems. It will also likely need a double mowing when it dries out.

Re: Mowing after rain
Sometimes you just have no choice. if the lawn is still wet ill do my best to stay off driveway and sidewalk and will go over previous path more than usual since lawn will be a little more difficult to cut.
I plan on bagging today when i get home at highest setting just to get it cut. I would normally think about using side shoot then going over again to mulch everything but i have too many Annus seed heads right now that I just going to bag.

Thanks for the responses guys, I figured I wasn't the only one.
Came home a bit early and took the plunge. Mowed at 4" to give me a good excuse to mow again this weekend to get back down to 3.5" where I wanted to stay until summer. Wasn't as bad as I thought, it dried out a decent amount today. Hit the bottom of the mower and wheels with the hose after to clean off the clumps of grass and hit the yard with my blower.
Grass looked 100% better after I was done. I went to sleep last night so depressed at how it looked I had visions of renovation in my mind. Now I'm happy with how thick and lush it looks! Looking forward to a nice weekend when I can mow again, edge and trim. Then drop more Milo!
