2 acres for a backpack sprayer
Is 2 acres to much for a backpack sprayer. I will most likely need to do a few blanket apps of a 3 way over the next few years and maybe a blanket app or two of tenacity. After I get the weeds under control blanket apps should be a rarity. I was trying to decide if a 15 gallon pull behind is really necessary?

Re: 2 acres for a backpack sprayer
There is a long thread on the Chapin 20V battery powered backpack sprayer in the equipment forum.
It puts out 0.5 gpm so for a 1gal/ksf that is two minutes, it is 4 gallons so about 8 minutes between fill ups.
It would take 88 minutes of continuous spraying plus fill up time for two acres.
I definitely would not want to hand pump but is two hours or so (depending on how efficient you can refill) too much for you?

Re: 2 acres for a backpack sprayer
How much time you have on your hands???
A typical backpack rate is 1 gallon per 1000 sq ft. Or about 10 backpacks per acre. I don't do a lot of large area spraying with a backpack but I would guess it will take 20 minutes to mix and spray 1 entire back pack. That puts 2 acres into a 6 plus hour event.......
Someone please correct me if you think I have over estimated

Andy use to do an acre with a pump sprayer, so you should probably be able to swing 2 acres with a backpack.

You could do it but I think it would be very difficult. I wouldn't do it. I value my time more than that.

10k square feet takes me about 45-60 minutes with the Chapin battery sprayer. Plan on 4x that amount of time for an acre.

Re: 2 acres for a backpack sprayer
I end up refilling once or twice on my 1 1/2 acres of turf with my 30 gallon pull behind. I can't imagine doing blanket sprays with a 4 gallon backpack sprayer on the whole thing in any normal amount of time I have available. I also question if it is more accurate. To do a quality job for things needing precision you need to go over it several different directions. Think you're up for spraying it two different directions?
I recommend getting a sprayer with pump powered spray wand you can use for the edges. Precision is more difficult on small spots where you don't want to spray adjacent plants - you have to be more concerned with drift. What I find myself doing for things like triclopyr / 24D is blanket spraying everything but the 5 feet in front of stuff it could potentially damage and then stopping to use the pump operated wand sprayer, which has great control and about a 20' reach.

Re: 2 acres for a backpack sprayer
I have a backpack and a tow behind. I have tighter areas I can't even get my tow behind into. I would highly recommend the tow behind and another smaller sprayer. There are also times you only need one or two gallons and the tow behind would be cumbersome.

Re: 2 acres for a backpack sprayer
That's what I was thinking. I'm thinking of getting a 15 gal pull behind but that even sounds a little small. The nice thing is I have access to a 50 gal tractor mounted sprayer that is on a three point hitch. Maybe the best thing to do is use it when I need blanket sprays.

Re: 2 acres for a backpack sprayer
Northern has this pull sprayer http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/ ... _200646314 plus you can use a $20 promo code.
I currently have one and have been using it weekly, it only does a 40in path but for the money it's cheap and works.

I have a Fimco 25 gallon pull behind. I agree that for two acres you need that, or bigger.

Re: 2 acres for a backpack sprayer
FWIW, I usually just apply in one direction. Unless I mess up my pace or something, I don't bother adding a second pass, but I have been doing this for a while. I also live on the edge and don't bother with tracker dye.
