ATY vs. Lawn Services
I couldn't resist these comparisons. The first shot is from when we first moved in, before my discovery of this site, exactly 4 years ago:
The next two were taken just now, in which you can compare a completely DIY lawn, based on principles learned here, with 2 neighbors who employ lawn services. I think that the results speak for themselves. Thanks, ATY People!

Re: ATY vs. Lawn Services
Both neighbors water their respective lawns, on what I can only guess is a random basis. We have had a fairly normal spring and early summer rain-wise; that has changed since the calendar flipped over to July, with less than an inch total the past two weeks. I just finished watering for the fourth time this year about 20 minutes ago. Oh, and I just saw a lawn service truck in the neighborhood, so it must be time for another application of something!LoneRanger wrote:^ .. uh, and water?

I have seen a few trucks around here as well. No rain and hot temps, everything is crispy but it's time to apply something!oze wrote: and I just saw a lawn service truck in the neighborhood, so it must be time for another application of something!

I think your miss representing all lawn care companies and discrediting YOURSELF for the amount of work you put into your yard. I would almost guarantee if you took your effort and applied it to your neighbors lawns, just swapping chemical apps, they would looks drastically better. Maybe not as good as yours but more then acceptable.

Re: ATY vs. Lawn Services
I just had the guy behind me (whose lawn was greenish in the first picture from 2012) come over and ask me how much my water bill was last month. Since June was fairly wet, I coyly told him that it was actually smaller than usual. He then asked me why my lawn was green and his was not, and I resisted pulling out the soapbox, but did mention this site and some of the things I learned here. Included were: Soil conditioning, especially by adding organic matter, and proactive fungus prevention. I inherited a lawn whose soil is the unfortunate host of the pythium blight pathogen, and looking around his yard, I would say that he is playing the gracious fungus host as well.
Anyway, he's sticking with his lawn service and their advice, since they are the professionals. As we walked away, I heard him mumbling, "Bull*&^%, it's just water". In any case, the most unfortunate outcome of our neighborly discussion is that I bet I have lost a major source of my fall leaves. I should have left out that part about leaves making great organic matter additions to the soil.
I can imagine Red from "That 70s Show" reading this and shaking his head at me:
