Dumped my Urea this morning
Western Massachusetts.
I haven't seen much top growth these past 2 weeks, too many morning frosts to count, in fact I don't think I've seen any top growth this past week. Good soaking rain in the forecast for this afternoon, so I said "this is it".
I'm probably a bit early, may still see some top growth with 60's temp coming the rest of the week, but I'd rather be a week or so early and get a good rain to get it down in there. Heck, Thanksgiving is next week, I think the season is done. Paul
Here's to next year folks, may it bring many inches more rain than this past year.

It sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that you did the right thing.
There is no such thing as "pretty much done growing" - it is growing or it is not. It's sort of like pregnancy - you are, or you are not.
If the grass is still growing (even if not much), a big shot of Nitrogen can force tender top growth. Erring on the side of waiting a little extra is the best way.

I highly doubt you are ready for your last dose already.. Calendar aside.. I can't imagine growth would cease before daytime temps remain under 50...

I agree.....I've learned to wait because there is a nice window before the ground freezes

Re: Dumped my Urea this morning
I also dropped my urea before the rain yesterday. I think the grass has stopped growing, last weekend's mowing just mulched leaves. Rain has been extremely rare this year, I did not want to miss the opportunity. Next precipitation is forecasted to be snow, I am not sure how big the window till ground freeze would be.
If it turns out it was too early, so be it. I'll learn from the experience.

+1. I'm working in Buffalo, NY and this should be Lake Effect season. It's been in the 50's and mild instead.

Re: Dumped my Urea this morning
I've got 80 degree weather tomorrow and then down to 53 with a low of 28.. my first real frost 27 days later than avg.
I did push the Urea out an extra week here, who knows when the growth will actually stop though.

Re: Dumped my Urea this morning
I'm in "fight with myself" mode this year. While temperatures right now are pushing sixty (or exceeding it; tomorrow we hit 65, Saturday is 67), it looks like it crashes at the beginning of next week with the possibility of some nice rain.
However, given the unpredictability this season, and the current temperatures in the Arctic (30-50 degrees above normal), a rebound due to weak Arctic flow seems likely even if it's not forecast at this time.
Fortunately, I don't have to call it until Saturday.

Hey Morph!
Good to see you back here.
The growth was really really slow, which leads me to believe the roots wanted N, and not the shoots.
....and the one time 3-4 years ago I dumped real early my lawn was fantastic the following Spring.
But yes, Andy is correct, trying to convince myself.
Seeing the blades stand at FULL attention this morning through the frost I knew they were like "woah! hey hey!! what's this??? 46-0-0 Urea?? Well yahoo lets party!!!!"
Ugh.
Well, it'll work out. Not the end of the world.

Re: Dumped my Urea this morning
I'm confused by Andy's comments now:. Is it going with avg frost data or going by what the OP feels the weather is going to be like?

Re: Dumped my Urea this morning
Average frost date starts The Pause. There is no harm if The Pause (period until final "Winterizer" drop) is longer than expected. The **complete** stoppage of growth signals the start of the window for the application of the Winterizing application.

Rocking this might help.....

As far as winterizer goes I wait til there are very little clippings when I mow in the bag. Your waiting til top growth stops. At that time the urea will be stored in the roots for next spring.

Re: Dumped my Urea this morning
I applied my last before work on the 15th. I had rain coming in so I took it. Here in central coastal Maine top growth is typically done prior to Thanksgiving. My ground temps are high 40s using an thermometer. Still golfing, and I noticed on the course growth has stopped. Also, my giant Oaks have minimal leaves left that I will mulch this weekend.

The Pause starts the clock to monitor full stoppage nut the mow is how to confirm stoppage of shoot growth.

According to this site, I'm within the 40° shoot growth ceasing soon for my MidAtlantic region.

Re: Dumped my Urea this morning
Even with the weather, today's mow (currently in progress outside my office window) is not cutting much of anything after 9 days. But I'm letting it go as it's cleaning up the leaves.
So, considering the temperature drops and weather change, it does look like tomorrow is Der Tag.

Re: Dumped my Urea this morning
A soil thermometer is ideal for these situations, top growth stops when soil temps are below 40 degrees, my soil temp is right around 48 and will likely drop through next week but I've mowed grass up until Christmas in the past . Keeping an eye on soil Temps is the best way to know when you are ready for winterizer

Re: Dumped my Urea this morning
A soil thermometer is great, but not everybody has one, and it's not necessary. You really can't go wrong with just mowing until there is no reason to and then dropping your winterizer.
