Got off the plane from TPA & went straight to the lawn @ 2PM to give it another cut.
Still some slight growth...
Rake all the elm leaves from our front road verges.
Was almost pitch black when I came in @ 5.45PM.

Weather is supposed to be nice (hi 50's & lo 60's) the next 7 out 8 days.
But the mid range forecast says a colder spell that should put an end to the cutting season will hit Central VA on ~ the 8th.

Debating if I should lay the Urea tomorrow & just put a period on this season tomorrow...
Part 2.

Rushed home to darkness @ 5.24PM.
Picked up a pile of leaves I had left over from prior day.

Then laid down 16.66 lbs of urea over 7.5k s ft. as my winterizer. Finished by 5.50pm.
Turned on the sprinklers for 15 mins each zone.

March thru Nov & the end of my lawn work for the year.
Sprinklers get winterized on Friday.
Feels like a football or baseball season.

Dropped 100 lbs urea last night after running over the lawn to mulch up leaves and smooth it all out. Ma nature gave us a nice rain today.

Dropped 10lbs of urea on my 5000 sq ft last night. It was nice waking up to the rain this morning. I guess that's a wrap!

Blew and mowed upper back. Mowed at 3.25 in with the bag. Checked the bag for clippings. Noticed a good number of clippings that were 1/8th to 1/2-inch, but not an overwhelming number of them. So the grass is still growing, but really slowly. Last mow on that area had been 5 days ago.

After that, I re-mowed (mulching this time) the area right behind the deck down to 2.75 in.

Then, I scattered the leaves I bagged up onto the low-input area and mulched them in.

Threw down some Moss-Out behind the deck (my first time using it).

It's like a sprint now before the wet, cold, snowy weather starts.

Tonight, mulch mowed main front at 3.25 in.

Yesterday, 2 neighbors across the street did what's likely their final mows.

Yesterday I put down some Pillar G on my front and side lawns for spring snow mold control and 6.25lbs/1000sf perennial rye grass seed on the front lawn as a dormant overseeding experiment.

That should wrap it up for the year, but I hope to get another leaf removal in before the snow comes.

Weather wise, today was very pleasant. I got outside and mowed the entire lawn.

Blew and mowed/mulched leaves lower back, side, and side front as 3.25 in. Slight growth on most areas since last mow. Only one more scheduled mow left this year, and that's going to be Monday to take the height down to 2.75 in. After that, it's getting much wetter, colder, and snowy. I'll also have to mulch the rest of the leaves, trim, and put down the winterizer then. I hope I can get it all done. Thankfully, I have most of the day free to do it.

Mulched, mulched, mulched. Gotta get that soil organic % up! Has been ~40 days since rain and everything is so dry and dusty I've probably inhaled a few leaves worth of dust today. Has been a great opportunity to really "stress" the new grass by letting it dry and then properly irrigating.

Mulch mowed grass & leaves @ 3.00". Very few autumn leaves still on the tops of southern red oak trees.

A couple of neighbors helped me fell a dead white oak tree that was in the front yard. We cut and split the trunk into firewood lengths. I'll grind the stump early next year. This will allow some needed sunlight into the front yard.

I noticed yesterday that although almost all of the leaves are down in our neighborhood (thankfully), about 2-3 miles North, some of the trees still have most of their leaves. Maybe they didn't get the wind as strongly.

Today, mowed grandfather's lawn for the final time of this year, and mulched in the leaves (after picking up some big branches first). I ended up double mowing the back, as usual.

Mowed for what looks like to be the final time. Temperatures will be dropping on Tuesday.

I'm surprised more people aren't posting about putting down a winterizer fertilizer app. Just sayin'.

Today I dumped the soil out of flower pots and stored the pots before the big freeze happens.

Ponder no longer! For better or worse, and after confirming no top growth, I had to drop my final feed of .75 / k of Southern States 37-0-0 yesterday (I have to rush out-of-town on business and won’t be back for a week :-(. Temps were in the mid- to upper- 60’s, a good soaking rain is forecast for tomorrow eve and, after that, daytime temps will be all up and down the 40’s with nighttime temps in the low- to mid- 20’s — for the next 10 consecutive days!!!

The estate is emerald and more than once I reflected upon how grateful I am to Andy and others here for such good guidance and tutelage — Thank Ye, thank ye ; Very Much!!!

After that nice walk-behind-the-spreader, I winterized ALL the small engines (except the leaf blower which I use all year ‘round) and stacked a bit of wood for mama, ahead of the coming deep freeze!

Of course, ‘round here, there’s nothing saying it won’t (and past records assure it entirely likely) that all this may be followed by temps in the 50’s/60’s for highs and 30’s / 40’s for lows again —- such is climatic life in The Foothills!!! :duel:

Happy Holidays, all!

Just goes to show the difference between the foothills and piedmont here in NC. Just cut a solid 3/4" off Saturday. Now, I'm sure it's really going to slow down with this big cold snap we're about to get.

I finally got mine down on Sunday and its raining today which is great timing...My mow on Saturday finally showed virtually no clippings. Temps are dropping this week into the 20's and we are supposed to get a bunch of snow so it was now or never for a winterizer app.

Cut about 1/3" off yesterday and blew the leaves out of the beds and got those mulched up. We've been in the 50s/60s for a while now with 70 expected today. Our first real cold snap is expected at the end of the week. I've still got growth out there and expect 2 more mows and one final leaf cleanup as the oaks are still dropping. I also have an invasive grass really starting to take hold in a section of sod I put down this year. I'll be starting a separate thread on that as I'm going to need some help.
