Spray weeds before or after Mow?

Post by Casutherland » May 25th, 2017, 5:25 pm

Hey guys, so I just got back from a week vacation and noticed that not only is my grass pretty high, but I have had some coney weeds pop up in the back yard.

Is it ok for me to go ahead and mow the yard now and then spray the weeds with triclopyr? Or should I spray the weeds now and mow tomorrow? I've got a delima on my hands since the grass is so high...

I don't mow at least a couple days before or after spraying a post-emergent herbicide. I would go ahead and mow and then wait at least two days before spraying.

Yeah the general rule of thumb is 2 and 2 (pre/post).

I was actually wondering the same thing. I'm curious if there is science behind it.

Science, not sure, but many labels say 2 days. If you spray herbicide and cut right away, anything on the cut off portion won't get into the plant. If you spray right after mowing, the plants may be shocked from the cutting and you have reduced plant surface area for absorption.

FWIW, I will spot spray the day after or before mowing. For blanket sprays, i avoid the generally recommended +/-2 day window around mowing.

I think it depends on how high you cut your grass, also how high the weeds are . I cut my grass at 4 inches all season so most of the time weeds never reach where my mower will cut them off. So I can spary before/after because my mower will never actually hit the weeds only grass.
