Download the app plantnet and upload the pic, it does a good job at suggesting things to research

I would have put money on Rose of Sharon, being quite familiar with the onslaught of seedlings this time of year. Let one mature some more and get back to us.

Huh? What you have is clearly a recent seedling that becomes something much bigger and woody.

Here is a Rose of Sharon seedling. Did you not already Google "Rose of Sharon seedling" and look at images? Use the tools available to you. I may very well be wrong, but at least compare apples to apples.

But, of course, if you don't have any nearby, it's easy to rule out! They're obnoxious seeders (unless triploid) and can easily sprout up in mass 30–40 feet away depending on your wind and drainage patterns.

I haven't been able to come up with any other candidate with a similar leaf.

How have you had luck controlling these? I have a bunch trying to come up under a main bush. I sprayed the area with Triclopyr a couple of weeks ago, not even checking to see what they were...just assuming they were violets.

Is spraying with Triclopyr effective or even recommended? Can they simply be pulled by hand and they won't come back in the same place again?

Rose of Sharon seedlings are an easy kill, also easily pulled. Like any woody plant seedling, if you get the root, that's it. No surprise underground propagation mechanism at play here. They're not generally an issue in my healthy turf, but they're pesky volunteers in my beds and woods. I spray with glyphosate or triclopyr, whichever is the soup du jour. Glyphosate is the better choice if you're spraying near any desirable plants or trees. A 2,4-D three-way would probably work just fine in the lawn, as would triclopyr, which is particularly good at killing woody plants.
