Seed selection

Post by Billybob » September 4th, 2017, 8:11 pm

I have an area that doesn't get much sun so when it rains the water sits around longer. It's not a low spot or a heavy compacted area. It's along side my garage which faces northeast.

So I'm going to try this

Any thoughts? If it doesn't work, I'm going to try something non grass. Maybe hardscape walk way with hosta's or something

Hostas hate constantly wet feet.

Go for that fine fescue blend (or is it technically a mix because there are very different types of FF in it?).
While FF tends to do better in moderately moist to slightly dry soils, it also seems to tolerate flooding ok. But be prepared to battle Bentgrass and Triv when the area remains damp for extended periods.

Yep..... triv been an issue there. Hit it in late spring with Velocity. Seemed to work, or maybe it's too soon for triv to rear its ugly head. Dormant all summer

I tried to fine fescue route at my old place for my shady back yard that would stay damp. Really did not like it, did not blend well with the tttf. Eventually went back to all tttf and just over seeded in the fall if turf declined. You will have to take care of the triv in the spring when its at it's peak, even then it will be a multi year battle.

We just bought a new home and the front yard looks terrible, except for the old FF that has been there forever with zero care. I overseeded it with the above Hogan Link mix, thinking is that I'm tired of fighting mother nature. However, I did add some NuGlade that I had laying around, we'll see
