Aggressive fall nitrogen program and dry weather

Post by Billybob » October 1st, 2017, 6:21 pm

I did one treatment of .5 lb nitrogen per week this season. By now I would have done 3-4. I watered in but with all the dry weather we been having, should we continue weekly apps, as long as we water in or wait it out til we get more moisture?

Wait for what -- the season to end? There is only one period and it is a mistake to bet that we are going to have an extended Fall. If you can provide enough water to support the urea dilution and the growth, the smart move is to assume that this late heat and dryness is just temporary.

Ok.... even if the lawn seems dormant? All I been doing is mulching leaves.

No. If the lawn is dormant, then you're not applying enough water for urea dilution and growth - the two parameters I identified.

Since it's dry, I'd go with an organic, like Milorganite for now. I don't like to do it on straw colored dormant grass, but if it's partially green, I'd go for it at a low rate at least once or twice in the next week or two.

I WAS doing the standard regime (milo) and quit after two applications, the lawn is now dormant and I don't want to push excessive growth with a pound of nitrogen once we get back into wet weather. we've already had a good frost so pushing growth after that point is asking for trouble.
