Germination test KBG from 2011

Post by kefjens » October 11th, 2017, 6:11 pm

KBG germination test 2011 seeds:

I know the question of using old seed comes up from time to time and I had recently checked the seed that I had from 2011 so I though I would share my results. The seed was stored since 2012 in ziplock bags in the bottom drawer of a refrigerator that borders on freezing (that's how I prefer my sodas). The test was done with 20 seeds placed on a damp paper towel folded in half and placed in a plastic bag. The bags were placed on a shelf with bright but indirect sunlight (NE facing room). Started on 30AUG2017 and ended 16SEP2017. The results were:

Prosperity: 18/20
Award: 16/20
Moonlight SLT: 12/20
Solar Eclipse: 16/20

I do not have the original tags to know the germination when harvested, seeds were a gift from another forum member.

I used this seed to repair damage to my lawn from some heavy equipment during landscaping and it has yet mutate and attack our dog so I assume it is safe to use after 6 years.....

Wow, that's better germination than I would have guessed! Thanks for sharing. I guess the lesson is you may lose some germination but it can still be viable for several years.

I think the clear plastic bags helped it last longer. When I tested, seed in plastic bags did better than seed in regular bags.

You're far too serious about your seed, should just store it in a paper bag in the top drawer of your toolbox. :)
