Silly Dog Pee Question - Seriously

Post by PSU4ME » November 4th, 2017, 11:48 am

So all spring/summer/fall long I’m all about the “no dog pee on my lawn” stuff. In the winter I let it happen.

So the silly question is this..... once the grass stops growing, can “Dutch” pee wherever he wants without rush of burning/killing the grass?

This is the first season I've really paid attention. I'll let me dogs "trash" the backyard over the winter like they normally do. We'll see how it comes out of it in spring. I doubt I'll go out there and pick up dog poop until everything thaws in the spring. We can experiment on my yard ;)

OK so how do wee deal with this? I've heard of sugar. My worst area is close to the North face of the house, so the last area to wake up. I want to do whatever I can to get ahead of it, if that is even possible.
Thanks all!

I have trained my dog to pee in the mulch beds. He does it now without me even guiding him there.

I've trained mine to run up to a specific area that i don't keep......it works amazingly well and I think he now prefers it.

But yes, if you see it happen, water it in and/or sugar. What happens, from what I understand, is that there is so much N that it burns the grass.....the sugar attracts the micro herd to help process it but then you're left with dark green patches!

I was hesitant to add a supplement to her diet but the more I research it the better it looks. Really just B Vitamins and Yucca which are all supposedly good for dogs. I think I'm headed that way for the future.

A dog we once had - pictured in my avatar - had the stuff of the gods.

Everywhere he peed over the winter resulted in rings of thick, green, lush grass when things started growing in the spring. During the growing season, same thing though less dramatic.

Then one January, the vet put him on thyroid meds (underactive thyroid) and we began supplementing his diet with a meat/cheese/grain casserole concoction and from then until the end he had the normal super-N formula that burned the lawn. Upside is either the thyroid meds or the casserole (or both) kicked his energy and interest level up.

Someone posted here in another thread that they believed it is typically the first pee of the day that is most potent if a dog is out a lot during the waking hours and suggested hitting that one with water is a good limited approach option.

Still miss that dog.
