HAppy New Year Andy and all. I guess I should have posted this here instead of the 2017 thread. Not technically "on the lawn" but brought in the herbicides from the garage to keep from freezing. Single digit temps all week...

Looks like we're getting some extended snow coverage this year around Indy.

So of course, it's been really cold (high of 14 here today and 0 last night). Before there was snow cover last week, I noticed lawn going very dark, almost black, due to the cold, windy, dry weather.

I stared at a few feet of snow covering the grass...which will be there until May.

Watched it get covered with snow. Extremely low temps moving in, this snow will be there for quite some time.

I watched the snow and leaves blow around in the wind. And admired the new patio that is partially in, but delayed by the cold.

Re: 2018: What did you do on your lawn today?
Heavy rain today. No idea how much as I'm not measuring, but up to 5 inches was predicted. Add to that a foot of snow melting...easily another inch of water.
It was so humid tonight (55 degrees, dew point around the same, and 95% humidity) that the players were slipping and sliding in the gym at a game I was working. Our AD actually had to keep mopping the floor every minute or two. I haven't seen this much humidity since July (or since I was in South Florida during September 2016).
One of the 72" snow stakes got broken...the plow driver in our area apparently chopped off about a one foot length of it during the last storm (that portion is probably still in the ground somewhere). I replaced it with a new one tonight. I'll have to get a knife to make a new point on the (now shorter) old one for future re-use. I've never sharpened fiberglass before...

Re: 2018: What did you do on your lawn today?
After all the rain and snow melt. I developed a small sink hole right in front of the mail box at the curb. I got the mail yesterday and noticed maybe 8 inch deep hole right at the post. So I have a bag of topsoil defrosting in the garage to fill it in before the mail box falls over.
I also walked around the backyard and noticed more settling back there another year removed from the deforestation.

Took soil temps in the front yesterday, and managed to get the thermometer in about an inch in two spots. Temps were 32-33F, and ground was generally frozen, as expected. Air temp was in the low to mid 40s when these reading were taken.

Re: 2018: What did you do on your lawn today?
Late Fall clean up complete. Yup, it went from 50s to nuthin' and hung out there for about 5 weeks here in Kentucky. No final fertilizer application, no final mow - I feel like I was robbed. The grass went into the deep freeze growing and came out dormant and covered with some sort of fungal disease. The yard looks yellow. Anyone else?
We had a wet 55 degrees this weekend, which was enough to thaw the ferns enough that they could be pulled out of their pots. Man, they looked worse than dead. Jet black. Did a soggy leaf pick-up around the hardscape and the snow melted allowing the Christmas lights to unfreeze from the bushes so I finally got 6000 of those put away. For the record I got the wreaths and anything visible from a distance down long ago.

Started recharging the solar light batteries the other day.
Today, got 0.55 in of rain. Flooding. It was 55F with dew point of 48 and 80% humidity after the rain stopped and the sun came out. Water vapor everywhere.

sunny spring (feeling) day here in Ontario. Did a walkaround to pick up some sticks an enjoy the lawn. I'm quite surprised at how green it still is at this point of the year.

Re: 2018: What did you do on your lawn today?
Leaves were blowing around everywhere, and it around 50, so I went outside this afternoon and raked up the areas where the most leaves were, picked up sticks, and raked matted areas to improve airflow. Neighbor's lawn didn't look too bad, even considering the heavy tree trucks that were driving over it the past few days.

1/10th-inch of rain last night, and some puddling again in the low-input area, as the ground is frozen.

Re: 2018: What did you do on your lawn today?
Started the mower yesterday! It was 60 and sunny. Got out in the back and mulched the last of the oak leaves and some of the Japanese Maple leaves - the rest are yet to fall. I also got to unbox my new Ego blower. Man, that thing is fantastic. It's more powerful than my Stihl gas powered. Very nice indeed.
Yard is still a sickening shade of yellow/Gold and there is evidence of fungal growth on the blades. Have done a deep dive into that yet...

I live about 3.5 hours south of you. The grass had stopped growing and I winterized around Christmas. It was looking quite nice. We then got the same extreme cold for an extended period followed by a few inches of snow. The grass came out of the cold spell with a horrible shade of yellow and the blades look awful. I take care of 2 lawns and know of a few other nice lawns in the area I keep an eye on. They all look like absolute crap right now.LouisvilleGrubber wrote: ↑January 29th, 2018, 4:28 pmStarted the mower yesterday! It was 60 and sunny. I'm sure it will perk up and outgrow it in the spring. If not I guess I'm buying some seed.

That's my plan. If you you figure out what it is start a thread. We can't be the only ones. I didn't find anything on the Google. I don't think it's snow mold.darkcrisis wrote: ↑January 29th, 2018, 10:28 pmI live about 3.5 hours south of you. The grass had stopped growing and I winterized around Christmas.
