What’s your average first mow?
It won’t be long now in these parts. The Forsythia has buds here in Louisville and the lawn has greened up. I don’t remember exactly how that coincides with grass growth but it’s a sign of early spring for sure. 60s and 70s next week, but the ground is a soggy mess. Pros started putting down PreM this week on my street.
Last year I could have started mowing early March but my mower was in the shop. Looks like I may be two to three weeks away. What about everyone else? If you don’t mind include your location. It would be nice to know how far ahead/behind some of you are so I can have that in the back of my head when I read your posts.

Re: What’s your average first mow?
We still have a ways to go here on Long Island. We just got a few inches of a wintry mix last night but temps around 50° today made sure it didn’t stick around.
This is only my second year keeping notes on the lawn but in 2017 the forsythia bloomed around April 9th and my first mow wasn’t until April 24th. I didn’t keep notes in 2016 so I have no other history to compare to.
I’m really looking forward to the start of the season!

I'm in NC and can't remember mowing much before late March. But, it has been a warmer February than usual.

It usually can use a cut sometimes between late March and mid April. But I usually do it before that even if it doesn't really need to be cut. Last year I did it in late Feb.

Here in northwest Ohio I always mow by April. About 25% of the time I start in March. Forsythia blooms in April. Lot of rain here and definitely warmed up. Looking like a possibility of an early spring.

Re: What’s your average first mow?
I noticed the more protected/shadier area of my lawn really perk up over the past 3-4 days. I never did a final cut last year as the grass just stopped growing. Contemplating lower the HOC and taking off some of the brown..
But, I guess it's time to start considering pre-em. I need to go look at the forsythia in my yard.

Re: What’s your average first mow?
First mow averages about March 15th, but that's to knock the dead tips off and expose the greener grass underneath.
First "real" mow won't be until around April 10th, give or take a lot due to weather. By the end of April, I'm back into mowing every 5 days.

I think I cut end of February last year, but that was similar to Morph in that I was removing dead tips rather than new growth. March is when it really picks up for me.

Re: What’s your average first mow?
Well, I was planning on March or so but...HOLY FIRST YEAR ATY KELP HELP VITAMIN M TRANSITION ZONE FESCUE GROWTH BATMAN! I am coming off my first fall applying the ATY success formula and my yard looks TEN times better than my neighbors'. The entire neighborhood is asking my wife how I did it!
I didn't winterize until Dec 26 I had to mow a good inch off of it last Saturday! And it's going to need mowing again tomorrow. I've got weeds starting to sprout all over the place. it's been crazy warm for the past few week. Approaching 80 today. I've GOT to get my Pre-M down. I'm seeing all kinds of weeds I didn't know existed. LOTS fewer weeds in the areas I treated with Tenacity in the fall.
We've had the kids miss a week of school from snow in March before. This weather is insane.
Anyway, I feel like I've got my work cut out for me.
Here's a pic as of last Saturday. This isn't show quality but if you'd seen my yard in previous years....

Re: What’s your average first mow?
Usually knock the dead tips off in late March. As needed after that. Early April regular weekly mowings, or more

Mid-April is usually my first mow, but mostly dead tips. Weekly mowing begins in May.
