Forsythia bloom in Central IN?

Post by cmcgill » March 2nd, 2018, 6:45 pm

I'm trying to decide if I have time to both overseed and apply a pre-emergent. I've not used a pre-emergent before and I got quite a bit of crabgrass last year. I plan on using Prodiamine 65WDG. I already have seed. If I were able to drop seed soon would I be fairly safe applying pre-emergent too?

Thanks for the insight!

Others more expert than I will weigh in but typically you wany the seedlings and root systems to be well established before applying most preemergents. You could use Mesotrione either by itself or with a starter fertilizer at or near seeding. I don’t think prodiamide would be good for your seeding (I think you’d want to seed at wait at least a month or likely longer before the PM.) what does the label say on your PM?

As a general rule, seeding and pre-emergents other than Mesotrione are a no-go together.

A simple option: If you just have a few areas to seed, and you feel comfortable applying the liquid in such a way as to avoid those areas, you could seed some areas and pre-M the areas that you don't seed.
