Bonehead things you've seen done
It can be by you or someone else.
I'll start, since it's fresh on my mind.
-------
Due to a cataclysmic timing situation, my neighbor's lawn was sprayed for weeds in the morning, then a mowing crew showed up an hour later and cut it all while still wet.
Whoooooops.
They weren't happy - one showed up way later and the other way earlier than they were supposed to in the week.

Someone sprayed Roundup on the entire lawn thinking it's a weedkiller. Worst part? that person used the long-term control type of Roundup.

Re: Bonehead things you've seen done
I have two weird string trimmer stories...
Saw someone hacking away at their curb area, apparently with the intent to "cut it back". Not sure if they were trying to edge it. It was a mess after.
Another one...guy in orange vest comes down the street with string trimmer and starts trimming in the gutter. Obviously a contract employee from the town. I ask, "what are you doing?" Says, "weedwacking the street" and chuckles under his breath. No $hit, Sherlock...but why are you doing that? In this case, it was the person's response that was boneheaded. Can anyone guess what happened a few days later?

Re: Bonehead things you've seen done
Exact same thing happened to my neighbor last year. The next day, guess who was back to spray again...the company formerly known as Chemlawn.HoosierLawnGnome wrote: ↑May 2nd, 2018, 12:42 pmDue to a cataclysmic timing situation, my neighbor's lawn was sprayed for weeds in the morning, then a mowing crew showed up an hour later and cut it all while still wet.

Many years ago (before ATY days)
I use to dead head the seedheads of my grass and spread them.
I wonder how many seeds were (cough)
Poa A.

Re: Bonehead things you've seen done
My neighbor, who "used to do lawncare" seeded some bare spots with that Scott's stuff in a bottle... in July... in St Louis. It, uh... didn't work out as he planned.
Another neighbor across the street has like zoysia or some warm season grass. It was pretty funny seeing her out there with the sprinklers going last fall after it went dormant
Another guy knocked on my door and I basically walked him through how to do a basic renovation. Pretty much every idea he had could qualify for this thread. I was like, "... or instead, you could try..."

Re: Bonehead things you've seen done
I live in a new subdivision and my neighbor across the street has had his tree staked and tied down for almost 2 years. I'm pretty sure the damn tree is straight at this point. I have told him on multiple occasions that the tree will straighten itself out naturally over time lol..now he has string tied so tight around the tree that it will most likely kill the middle section of the tree eventually lol.

Granular pre emergent applied right after a broadcast overseed. I didn’t say a word.

Throw down a fistful of seeds, followed by a fistful of fert.

Re: Bonehead things you've seen done
Right now, I'm watching the landscaper on my neighbor's property blow a few leaves around with the seed they dropped a week or so ago...job security, because the neigbor doesn't know any better. I am hesitant to say anything to him because we have a good relationship as well as our kids get along together well. He's asked me here and there for some tips, but hasn't taken any. I can tell he doesn't want to admit he doesn't have much knowledge or interest in the yard.

Re: Bonehead things you've seen done
Uh.. I just found out yesterday after mowing the lawn, I had installed my gator blade upside down after sharpening it. I've been mowing twice a week for the past 3 weeks since I reinstalled the blade. I was getting a terrible cut and couldn't get it to mulch at all without shooting clumps everywhere. I looked at the grass and was noticing the cut wasn't clean at all. Only took me 3 weeks to figure it out. D'oh!
I almost picked up a HRX217 because of this boneheaded mistake.
Beating my grass to death for the past three weeks did a number on the lawn. Whole lawn started losing color and got patches of die off. I thought my fert app a couple weeks ago was causing the issues. What a nice way to start the season. Pretty amateur thing to do, and embarrassed by it. Hope the lawn recovers.

Re: Bonehead things you've seen done
The other day, my neighbor mowed their grass. It had been about 3 weeks. They had trouble with the mower working right, and couldn't get it to bag. It left huge amounts of clippings, as you'd expect. They raked it up. The lawn went partially brown, as you'd expect. Fine. Then this morning, their contract mowing guy comes and starts mowing it, 2 days later (in the 92-degree heat). Fine...he cleaned it up a bit and it looks better. But their sprinklers ended up going on while he's in the middle of mowing. The guy ends up doing the best he can, mowing around them. The sum total of all of this was interesting, in the least.
