Who hasn't applied Nitrogen yet?

Post by HoosierLawnGnome » May 13th, 2018, 9:28 pm

First year I've not done so by now. Not even milorganite. Last year's winterize really went far this year. I need to get an app down this week as color took a hit during the heat while I was gone for a week, but the winterizer on a mature KBG lawn really showed its value this year.

Normally, I have applied no N to the entire yard at this point. It still grows like crazy during May.

This year, I haven't applied any N to the back or low-input area. That's more than half of the yard. Here is where I've already applied N, and the amounts so far:
-Side: 0.25 lb/K from granular, plus 0.10 lb/K foliar
-Main Front: 0.25 lb/K from granular on the previously overseeded half, as well as a small area near the street about 15x15 feet where the neighbor's lawn service threw granular too far.
Side front: 0.25 lb/K from granular only on previously overseeded section, plus a tiny amount from an FAS application over the whole area.

What are you classifying as mature? I've read that as the first few years go by post seeding, the lawn tends to need less and less N, until about 3 lbs/K per year may be sufficient after several years post seeding. I think the study I read mentioned 6 years as being fully mature, but I don't remember where I read it.

2 years or more IMO. The color difference on my 2 year old lawn this year compared to last years is 5 fold, even mowing at 1.25 inches.

I chalk it up to the root system finally digging intomy clay silt based soil and being able to store up nutrients better.

I haven't dropped any yet... but I wish I would have before all the rain we received this past week. I'd like to help some thin spots from fall seeding fill in.

Threw down 16lbs of milo in the dogs 500sqft area last night and a few thin/dead spots from last falls last app of urea that got a bit too much and not watered in. I was planning on doing the rest of my acre this week before we leave for the dells. But I think I will have to wait till this coming weekend. Mine still looks good, but there's a lot of thin areas again from my urea drop from last fall. We havent had much for warm days yet over 70's this spring.

I haven't, but I haven't applied nitrogen in years, since I've been trying to encourage the native grasses.

I dropped 12-12-12 last night. Since I don't have automatic sprinklers I wanted to take advantage of the rain overnight.

Yea, I put out DAP last night too. But the rain missed my yard!

Nothing yet here. Put urea down in the pause and it had the desired effect. We had a mid-April blizzard and most snow on record for that month, so things started out very slow here, but our lawn greened up ahead of others.

I still haven't put down anything yet. I started a bit later than the neighbors, but every time I cut it gets a darker shade of green. It's so dark and thick that I don't see a need to push it earlier than Memorial Day.

I agree with HLG that there is a noticable difference this second Spring compared to the first.

Meant to write after top growth ended in the fall instead of "the pause" .... would change it but it looks like I cannot edit my own posts after xxx amount of time. Sorry.

No N yet for me. I plan to put something down with in the week. The long winter pushed the application dates back quite a bit this year.

Not yet, but I anticipate a heavy dose of milorganite in the next two weeks.
