white blob of spider web looking thing?

Post by seiyafan » July 2nd, 2018, 7:38 am

Recently there are about 6-7 of these things show up on the lawn, especially apparently with the morning dew, they look like spider webs from a distance but up close it's a blob of light and airy fungus? Anyone have any ideas?

It’s nearly impossible to diagnose from an internet photo. It could be insects. But your description sounds like Dollarspot.

I’d take a sample and closeup photos and consult with your local cooperative extension.

Come now. Those are definitely spider webs. Just google images of "spider webs in lawn" and tell me that you have any doubt.

I don't live far from Seiyafan, and I get spider webs in mid/late Summer, without it ever turning into damage in those spots. Could that be from Serenade applications protecting the blades? I dunno. I don't spend time tackling problems that don't seem to develop into real problems.

I act as if the spider web cause is something called "Spiders"...

At first I thought it was likely dollar spot, based on the fact that it's appearing in the early morning and the description that up close it looks like fungus. But when I blew up some of the pictures, it looks like there might be sort of a hole in the middle, which is the way some spiders build webs near the ground (they stay in the hole and come out when the web snags an insect).

I agree with TT--get closeups and grab a sample and take them to the county extension office for ID.

Definitely spider webs. Google grass spider or funnel weaving spider for info. If you take a small twig and tap gently on the web like an insect landing, you may get the spider to rush out of the funnel looking to attack something.
