Re: Frost/Freeze Right On Time
We missed the first frost here by 1 degree - it was a bit breezy overnight, and the air stayed mixed and frost didn't settle. Tonight isn't a borderline situation - it WILL frost over.
I spent quite a bit of time last night moving plants into the house from the porch to overwinter. Dirty job.

Re: Frost/Freeze Right On Time
Nothing here, we stayed about four degrees too warm. We've got another chance tonight, but it looks like it's going to stay too windy.

We were about a week earlier than average, hitting 30 on the 10th with mixed 20's and 30's since then.

Re: Frost/Freeze Right On Time
Looking across all of the posts, I don't see any early trends or late trends - I see pretty close to the averages as the trend.

Re: Frost/Freeze Right On Time
We were right on time too here in Indiana. Quick question on my overseed from last month. We have had 2 frost this week, nothing real hard but frost none the less. Does the frost's cause all the new growth to stop or will it still move some since we are still getting into the high 50's during the day?

Re: Frost/Freeze Right On Time
No, frost causes nothing in the lawn. It is merely a good signal to use that has a tendency to predict the beginning of the greatest period of slowdown. Don't overthink its importance.

We barely missed an early frost. Typical first frost is ~Nov 10, but we hit 35° on October 14.

Re: Frost/Freeze Right On Time
We are a little behind the average but this morning as I type have a hard frost on the lawn.
I’m recovering from surgery and have nothing but time to kill as I’m unable to do any lawn work now until next Spring
Lawn has really slowed down on the growth I’m guessing one or two mows before lawn is done for the year.

Re: Frost/Freeze Right On Time
Average frost here is Sept. 28. Looking at my notes from the last 5 years,
first frosts was pretty accurate to that date.
This year, first (light) frost was Oct. 14. 2 weeks later.
We are in a "freeze" warning this morning until 9 am.
Temp now is 29.
Too dark at the moment to see if there's frost on my lawn.
It's suppose to go to 65 by this afternoon.
Typical New England weather.

Re: Frost/Freeze Right On Time
Escaped frost yesterday by 1 degree. No escape today - solid frost. So, 1 day late.

Re: Frost/Freeze Right On Time
I don't have enough data of my own to compare to, but I woke up this morning to our first light frost. This is about a week early according to Dave's Garden's date of October 27. Looks like we have time until hard frost here. The forecast for the next 10 days has lows around 40° or warmer.

Re: Frost/Freeze Right On Time
A few hundred miles up the Mississippi from you in the eastern Twin Cities, we were also just over a week early for first frost (average first frost date is Oct. 6th, hit for me September 29th). A fluke, as overnight air temps returned to normal (40s and 30s). First actual freeze was Oct. 12th, followed by snow on the 13th (more than the dusting predicted but gone by evening).Riverpilot wrote: ↑October 18th, 2018, 5:34 pmWe were about a week earlier than average, hitting 30 on the 10th with mixed 20's and 30's since then.
Fall is usually glorious in Minnesota, but September and October have both been grey and rainy. It has been dry since Saturday and there are still stops in my yard that are squishy underfoot.

Yeah, there seems to be some sort of issue that doesn't make sense to me. Photos always used to work just fine for me.
I opened up a different thread on the issue at viewtopic.php?f=9&t=24558

Re: Frost/Freeze Right On Time
Ours was a "sorta" frost. We got patchy frost that penetrated about halfway into the gardens and took out almost everything at the edges of more than half the gardens and the tropical plants throughout.
I'm calling it first frost, 20 hours early for the year.
