So my neighbor had red thread this summer and i put some urea treatments down to try and push it out but it didn't work. We overseeded his lawn this fall (with decent success) and i cut it the other days for the first time in about 45 days only to see that the red thread still remained.

So given the time of the year, would you suggest a treatment? Will it die out on its own (surprised to see it holding on in this cold weather)? If left unchecked is he in for a bad problem next spring?

Can you convince him to pay for Serenade? If it were me, I'd want to treat it...but not with a synthetic. My reason is I'd be afraid of letting it go into Winter damaged by disease, and Serenade does a good job on it as a curative in my experience, even if you didn't use it all year as a program (though I don't know how good its November performance is, since you would expect bacteria to need a certain temperature to survive).

So, I would:

1. Find out if Serenade is effective in our November temps, and if it is...

2. Double check if the curative effect on red thread is robust enough to spend money on it. (To me, anecdotally, it was in the Spring, but required 2 apps to halt deterioration.)

3. See if he would consider using it.

If you are going to spray Serenade, make sure you cover half of the area to leave a "control group", so the result will be more accurate.

Yeah serenade would be my choice for a treatment if I did one. I had expected it to not live here in the late fall but it seems like it won’t go away without some kind of intervention.

Red Thread easily overwinters in dead grass blade material, and it blows around in the wind too next Spring. Some Seranade now and doing preventative apps preventative apps in the Spring will knock it down by maybe 90%, and if you keep up the preventative apps it will finish it off.

Thanks Andy, if we went with something like Scott’s DiseaseEX, would that knock it out for good or do you think it’ll still linger in the spring? He was very bad on applying the N this year so that’s a big contributor to why its here and why we can avoid it next year

I don't think it will knock it out, because Red Thread isn't all active and the spores can overwinter in dead grass blades or come in the wind. This is why Red Thread recurs after treating - again and again. Good cultural practices are needed over time to clean it up well.

Understood. Would you lean to diseaseEx or serenade this time of year given the showing growth and cold(er) temps?

I'm going to pass on deciding that - I have little experience with applying Serenade or DiseaseEx in very late season.

Hey PSU4ME, did you end up trying anything to treat the red thread you saw in late Oct? Any results?

We threw down diseaseEX on his lawn and I’ll say it got a good bit of it. I’m hoping in the spring that a good nitrogen burst pushed it out and if not I’ll serenade it to sleep

I saw a spot of red thread for the first time in like 7 months last week. I last used Serenade in early Dec., I believe...during a period with no rain.
