Fall weed control

Post by southern-ct-4 » October 29th, 2018, 3:35 pm

I noticed that the lawn maintenance schedule on this site says:

"November: This is the best time of year to control broadleaf weeds. Apply post-emergent herbicide for winter's crop and to help prevent them the following spring and summer."

Is there a particular product (chemical) that is recommended (i.e. 2,4-d, dicamba...) for this application?

And is there a particular timing (November is normally after 1st frost, at least here in the northeast, so I assume it's not frost related...)?

Anything else I should take into consideration for this application?

Finally, is this only recommended if weeds are a big/ongoing problem? Should I otherwise not apply blanket weed control in November?

Thanks!

I feel like October is about as good as it gets in the Fall for weed control. In November in our area, it seems things slow down a bit more and aren't as responsive. April or May seem to work really well, better than a cool October. Some of it depends on your particular herbicides and how they function in certain temps. Different formulas function differently. For example, Triclopyr amine salt doesn't seem to work as well in cold weather (personal observation). But the ester version apparently can be downright dangerous in hot weather (haven't used it yet, so can't comment personally, but I would be careful if I were, because I've read this).

Yeah, that article was written a long time ago (even pre-Tenacity days), and could use a refresh. Maybe this winter I'll get to it.

I'm personally prone to liking September as the best weed killing month (October in the Transition Zone).

Ok thanks. So I guess nothing at this point in time...

In September, do you put a blanket app of anything, or just spot spray?

Andy has a good point about September, too. I'd like to add, I just keep in mind the temperature restrictions on the label. Speaking of heat, August is often pretty bad for weed killing due to Summer stress impeding growth, but there are no absolute rules...it depends what you're killing. For here in the inland part of the state (6b), I usually tend to find late April-June and mid Sept to mid or late Oct. best. If you're in zone 7a near the water, there may be a bit wider range due to warmer mid Fall temps and cooler Summer temps in some cases.

I should have read this post earlier... My neighbor stopped by and talked about weed control in the afternoon. I just confidently :aikido: referred to the content in the article and persuaded him of using Weed-B-Gon® Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis Killer next month... I may have to talk to him again before he goes to homedepot

it looks like Nov is not bad for ground ivy control by using Triclopyr.

Thanks Mochi! I was thinking of spot application of Triclopyr today and this is helpful. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Not too many weeds drop dead with a single application of Triclopyr. Do you have enough time to apply Triclopyr, let it work for 14 days, hit it again and let it work for 14 days -- and still have active, growing weeds (before all growth stops)?
