I finally closed out 2018 year-end activities. I cleaned/serviced the mower, trimmer, etc., over Thanksgiving, but it was time for my every-3-years overhaul of the tractor. After filters, plugs, oil, etc., I dropped the deck and scraped/wirebrushed pretty much everything that was painted.

Then, given that the paint I was using required over 50 degrees, under 85% humidity, and 48 hours to dry, I waited and waited. I finally wrapped up 2 weekends ago, then this weekend I replaced the blade brake assemblies and put it all back together. Today I parked it for the winter, pulled the battery (and painted the battery compartment - 35 degrees,, we'll see how that works), squirted some oil in the spark plug hole and spun the engine a few times, filled up with treated gas, put the new cover over it, and locked up the shed for good.

Is it time for next season's soil testing yet?

Real winter is coming, by May some PR growers in Chicago area will wonder why lawn is looking brown.

It goes against what you'd expect, but my observations the past few weeks here show PR currently holding color better than other species.

Found the golf course nearest me runs the same triplex I have and are willing to do work on it for me. So, I drove that thing over today in some pretty cold weather and dropped it off. The GC and I talked for over an hour. Great guy, we have a lot of mutual friends.

So, I'm getting new bedknives, all alignment done etc.

Cleaned up the garage area while the mower is out.

Loaded up the jeep with (10) 3 cu ft packages of peat moss... stocking up for a spring overseed. All that's left is to decide on which seeds I will be going with!

Very nice!

I'm also stocking up on used coffee grounds over the winter.

I need to stack the rest of the logs in the yard now that my back is recovering from a sports injury. Sucks getting old.

As I was cleaning the garage this weekend I ran across some leftover seed I had used last fall, just after reading a Kansas State study showing early February as the best time for dormant seeding - https://www.johnson.k-state.edu/lawn-ga ... lawns.html - so I grabbed the small broadcast spreader and made a few passes over an area in the back that's been trampled a bit and needs some work next season.

I figured 5 minutes of effort couldn't hurt. I'll just need to remember to delay pre-emergent there in a couple of months.

65F today has me thinking of soil sampling, though I know there a few winter storms still to come. But I've used March 1-5 for the last few years to be consistent, so it's not that far off.

Picked up the triplex from the golf course and ordered a bunch of parts. New bedknives, replacement bushings and the like. Need to regrease the reel motors.

Took soil samples over the weekend, and then mailed off to Logan Labs. Curious to see what the results show, but it definitely looks like carolina clay....

Not my lawn, per se, but I finally got around to dumping the spent grains from my last brew day on the garden,

Sprayed some of the trees with a homemade deer repellent, Andy’s recipe. So far, fingers crossed, its been working. I also unboxed a new Chapin 20 volt backpack sprayer which I tested with water. I’ll practice more with it once this fresh snow melts away.

OMG !! While that formula works, it repels humans even better than it repels deer. Thank God no one is outside this time of year,

I use (successfully) "Liquid Fence" with both a penetrant and and polymer-sticker. I get at least 6-weeks of coverage with that combo.

Andy, sadly there was a slight breeze when I applied it... yeah I learned the hard way.

Question for you, not to derail this topic too much, but after some research I understand that an example of a penetrant could be DMSO, as for the polymer-sticker, is that considered Wilt Proof which you mentioned in your deer repellent recipe thread, or just a simple spreader sticker?

Put your question in a different thread (Cool Season?) and I'll answer it.

More triplex prep for the season and procurement of free OM. Should be in tip top shape soon.

The deer wandered in the yard Tuesday night and started in on my brand new bald cypress trees. Out of desperation, I top dressed my snow last night with milorganite as I needed something to hold me over until my Amazon order of Bobbex arrived today. Should have known to check here first, of course there is a homemade recipe! This is our snowiest winter of the past six so they must be feeling desperate or bored. Here’s to hoping I can get the trees to bounce back.

I seeded twelve, 10” diameters pots with Bewitched. I’ll keep them inside in a room with a southern exposure for a couple months or so then use them for repair.

Yesterday I mowed and applied some 10-10-10. Feels good to get out in the yard again.
