I think the biggest problem with Milorganite is it is over priced. Many states have much cheaper alternatives that are basically the same product.
A lot of it is transportation cost. In the Northeast, if you subtract out the cost of it in the Midwest near the source, we're literally subsidizing like $3-10 in transport cost, plus markups (and more often the higher end of that range). Hoping that if/when Baystate makes it to Lowes in CT someday, that they don't mark it up to equal the cost of Milorganite just because they can.

Yay for alternatives. Indiana doesnt produce a biosolids fertilizer akin to milo that I know of, but I think the ideal natural fertilizer I've seen on shelves is from our buckeye brethren to the east.

You're freaking me out a little HLG! I double-checked at my local do-it center and instead of just having a handful of bags available tucked away on a shelf, they have what appears to be a half pallet hanging out in the back. *phew!* I lucked out last year and had Jet (aka Walmart) free-ship me 10 bags @ 11.27 per.

Hoosier,
Perhaps "scamming" is the wrong term. I can't figure out how 32# will give the same coverage as 36# when the spreader settings on the bag have not changed, regardless of the N-P-K ratio.
I'm curious to see a side by side comparison. Spread 36 lbs on half a field, 32 lbs on the other half. Is the difference actually observable?
That's the wrong experiment.

You'd have to spread 36 lb of the old vs 32 of the new. And you'd probably need to do it for several years.

Guys...Maybe I'm not stating my question properly. So let me try again. The spreader settings on the bag have not changed with the reduction of product in the bag. So, how can we get the same coverage regardless of the change in formula?

Walk faster?

I've never really trusted any spreader setting recommendations. I always calculated how much I'd need, then set the spreader fairly low and just keep spreading, making multiple passes in different directions until all the fertilizer is gone.

The pallet at the Do-it center is gone. I asked and they said they had to pull it due to compliance issues. I haven't been able to find it anywhere else on the north side. :o

I bought a couple bags of the Menard's version last night so we'll see how it does. It is a bit cheaper than Milo @10.99 a bag but we'll see. I'm already skeptical because I have the 2 bags in my garage and my wife hasn't commented on the smell yet :rotfl:

The Milo section at a couple of the big box stores near me is gone as well. No pallets or price stickers anywhere, and stock is "limited to none" online almost everywhere. Ruh roh

The past few weeks, I'm now seeing the new (32-lb) bags of Milo appearing in stores.

This thread was mainly intended for Indiana residents, but I do understand the shortage impacts others.

My friend in Fishers found a bunch on the shelf somewhere so it's still around. Hes at the olio rd 116th st area. Maybe see if there are stores in there that would normally have it.

Eta: based on the picture of the green, lawn garden style cart in a fishing aisle he posted, looks like meijer.

Picked up 20 bags (all of remaining stock) at Meijer in Avon, IN today... Meijer may be the winner!

Even in NH it’s a scavenger hunt to find it.

A lot of stores are out or don’t carry it.

Yes, but the good news about being in southern New Hampshire is that for less than a 3-hour round trip to Quincy, MA, you can get as much Bay State Fertilizer as your vehicle can carry, for only $3.50 a bag - and the bags are 40# each.

We still need to make our annual trek this year.

Not just the cost but the time to spend half a day driving down there and back.

I’ll have to eventually try and get down there.

I've been too lazy. Check with Carl to see if they've resumed delivery options. The website still says " We are unable to offer delivery at this time." I wouldn't mind making the trek, but I don't have a vehicle or trailer capable of bringing back 1 or 2 tons (pallets) at a time to make the trek worthwhile.

See my previous posts regarding delivery of Bay State Fertilizer here and here.
