Re: Milorganite shortage and data compliance issue in Indiana
Frankly, I haven’t seen the shortage of Milorganite.
I normally use Oceangro. But there are always bags of milo available whenever I’m in Home Depot.

I saw the shortage last year during the Summer; the Home Depots near me were out for a while. But it's too early to tell if it's continuing, since I haven't been back to those stores recently.

That's actually a better price than some stores, like Home Depot. Good to know.Trike007 wrote: ↑March 7th, 2019, 7:01 pmIn terms of the shortage. If you have a True Value nearby, you can do a free ship to store option. I just got 8 bag shipped to my local store at $11.99/bag. https://www.truevalue.com/eco-friendly- ... izer-36-lb I haven't been able to find it at my local Lowes since the beginning of last spring.
To comment further on my last response, many of the Home Depots in my state do have significant stock according to their website. Also, my local Walmart does as well, which is surprising (and they have the best price technically). So, there does not appear to be a shortage in CT/RI at this time.
It's unlikely I'll need more than a bag or two this Spring, considering I have some leftover.

Went to Home Depot. Figured I'd look and report back here. No Milorganite. Also none currently at any of their locations in the state.

I don't remember if CT is one of them, but many states now prohibit fertilizer applications before April 1st. That could be related.

Andy,
Not sure on that either.
But apparently I spoke too soon. My tablet was not showing the correct inventory. Tried my phone, and it claims some local stores do have it now, even though the one near me didn't seem to have it in stock. I say give it a few weeks and we'll see who really has it and who doesn't, as Winter inventory is moved up and Spring inventory down.

I went to one of my favorite stores today, Site One. Interesting conversations about winter, etc.. when we started talking about lawns and using milorganite, which they have plenty of 50lb bags at my local store, one of the guys stated Lesco has a fertilizer with milorganite in it. A 15-3-7 40lb bag, which would cover approximately 6,000sq ft lawn.
The version they have in stock is a green grade granular variety, but I grabbed a couple bags anyway. It sounds like this is their version of Screamin Green(16-2-3). I'm going to give it a try this season.

I saw some wrapped on pallets at a specialty store south side.
I haven't seen any at big box stores, but I know of 2 specialty stores that have it.

Re: Milorganite shortage and data compliance issue in Indiana
Even if I could find it in bulk at a good price, a full app on 1.4 acres is a budget buster for me at roughly 200 bucks a pop.
So, I'm relying on FAS. A bag of ferrous sulfate and ammonium sulfate are about 70 bucks and can be added to PGRs I need to regularly spray.
Also, anyone ever seen the look on their spouses face when you discuss storing 100 bags of recycled poo in your garage over a hot summer?

Re: Milorganite shortage and data compliance issue in Indiana
Just realized that the bag now contains only 32#. The explanation on the Miloganite site says that its because they upped the percentage to 6-4-0. But I just looked a bag that I bought from H.D. a few weeks ago and its the 36# bag. So, are we being scammed?

I dont think anyone is scamming anyone else. The product is fundamentally recycled so inevitably there will be variability in the production materials used, processes change to manufacture it etc.
I'm seeing more alternatives now on the shelf, like ideal natural fertilizer.

Re: Milorganite shortage and data compliance issue in Indiana
Maybe their nutrient values are in fact still slowly increasing. I remember a few years ago, it was 5-2-0, and it slowly increased toward 6-4-0 over a few years. Maybe it's actually a bit above 6% N in the latest bags. I remember the bags marked 5% N were actually above 5% N as time went on. If this keeps happening, they will eventually change the label to 7-4-0 or 7-5-0. We will see...
As a side-thought, why do some people never put the date on their writing? That Milorganite letter does not have a date on it. Or, is the "18-030" at the lower right the date (meaning this letter is actually from a whole year ago)?

Hoosier,
Perhaps "scamming" is the wrong term. I can't figure out how 32# will give the same coverage as 36# when the spreader settings on the bag have not changed, regardless of the N-P-K ratio.

I think the biggest problem with Milorganite is it is over priced. Many states have much cheaper alternatives that are basically the same product.

Re: Milorganite shortage and data compliance issue in Indiana
I'm curious to see a side by side comparison. Spread 36 lbs on half a field, 32 lbs on the other half. Is the difference actually observable?
