Checked price for Milorganite on Truevalue and Ace Hardware websites. Both describe Milorganite as a 32 lb. bag, not 36. Prices may have stayed the same from last year but they’re shorting us 4 lbs. Bummer!

That means for every 7 bags you used to buy, you'll have to buy 8 bags now.
So, if you paid $12 per bag, you'll have to pay $96 instead of $84. You'll have a little extra material with 8 smaller bags, and it may take up slightly more storage space both on a pallet and in your shed, basement, or garage. But at the same time, bags will be easier to handle. I wonder if this has to with the supposedly continuing shortage from last year, and I wonder if the analysis changed again. I do know they are redesigning the bag, but did not expect it to get smaller, just like most products do over time. Didn't it used to be 40 lbs a long time ago?

According to the photo on Ace Hardware's website, it still covers 2,500 sqft. So the price per 1k is the same, just less product to spread.

They likely just changed the coverage number on the bag. Unless it's 7% N now, which I doubt.

The old bag was 36lbs of 5-2-0 that covered 2,500 sqft. That’s .72 N per 1k. The new bag is 32lbs of 6-4-0 that covers 2,500 sqft, which is .768 N per 1k.

The loss is the iron. The old bag was 4% which came to .576 per 1k, while the new 32lb bag is only 2.5% and comes to .32 per 1k. Almost half the iron, bummer.

5-2-0? That was a few years ago. I guess you missed not only the 36# 5-4-0 bags that came after that, but also the 36# 6-4-0 bags after those (over the past couple of years). So, if it's still 6-4-0 like last year, and now is 32 lbs instead of 36 lbs, there has to be a loss of N. You are right about the loss of iron.

Oceangro for NJ users is looking better by the day. Same iron and nitrogen as new Milo formula. But it comes in a 50 pound bag and is much less expensive than Milo.

Ah, I stand corrected Green. My bad. There’s a store that sells 36lb Milo for $9.99(HD is almost $15) but it’s a bit of a drive, so I buy it by the pallet every couple of years and store it at my parents. I brought the last couple bags to my house the other day, so I just went and checked and indeed 5-4-0 is what I have. Since these are my last two bags I guess I better get a pallet of the 36lb 6-4-0 soon before current stock sells out and it goes to 32lb. Thanks for the clarification.

TT, do you get Oceangro at Ferris or somewhere else? I’m in Middlesex county too. I have been using Milo but if there is significant cost savings I’ll go to get Oceangro rather than Milo down the street at Lowe’s. Thanks.

If you have a Site-One near you, many of the stores do carry it. They come in 50lb bags. For me, I prefer the 36lb bags, 2 bags and I'm finished in my lawn.

It’s your money. But there’s better bang for your buck with Oceangro.

According to the Ocean County Utility Authority, Site One is not an authorized dealer for Oceangro. So I’m not sure where they’d be getting it from.

TT, May thanks. I’ll call Ferris and use them, providing they have it in stock. I probably won’t fertilize until May or so but will pick up bags and just keep it in the shed until then. Thanks again.
