New day - new yard invader (weed id)

Post by flyingfish88 » March 29th, 2019, 5:53 pm

Feels like every day now I’m noticing something new in the yard.

Some sort of grass, light green and growing already.

Is this one of the dreaded POAs?

Thanks!

To me, there is a good chance of that being an (undesired) Poa species. It seems to have the boat-shaped tips, and is light in color. I'm leaning toward Triv, but not totally certain. I do say it's a Poa of some type if I'm betting, though.

Hard to definitively say from the photos but like Green, I’d lean toward poa trivialis. Hope not. Poa annua is much easier to control.

Hi Green and Pway,

thank you for the insight. it is growing like crazy and even found a spot where its already going to seed (in southeast PA). Some of the blades are approaching a foot long.

I got some better pictures, I noticed that the lower stems are turning a dark purple color. In some spots its much larger and darker coloration than this pic. Does the purple coloration and going to seed already rule out triv? some searching said it could be barnyard grass? There are not clasping auricles, which seem to be csae with both triv and barnyard grass.

I am trying my hardest to rule this out as triv, haha :)

appreciate the help!
Dan

I don’t know. Are the first pictures and the second set the same weed? Based on the floppy, lighter green, stolons of the first set I thought triv. The second set of pix seems darker, more rigid, and overall different. Sorry, I’m at a loss!

I don’t think it’s poa trivialis. I dealt with a lot of it at my old house. Poa trivialis has very shallow roots and pulls up easily in big clumps like newly planted sod. The ground beneath it and roots are usually very moist and has a weird earthy smell to it. Garycinchicago once compared the smell to “asswipe paper”. The auricles of this grass are open and it seems wider bladed than poa trivialis.

Is that the same grass in the second of pics? Also, is the base of the plant (where the roots attach) what you'd call "bulbous" by any chance?

Hi All,

Yes, same as in original pictures, it really has grown and taken off a ton. Included some more pics from yesterday.

Hit it with weed b gon with crab grass control but does not seem to have any effect yet.

Green - not sure if I would call the base “bulbous” but I included some more pics. Have numerous spots in yard and noticed other yards in neighborhood with this. I pulled off many of the leaves with seed heads yesterday to try and control whatever it might be.
