Has your lawn reno caused an unspoken competition with neighbors?

Post by john5246 » May 26th, 2019, 1:49 pm

So I'm in the middle or a reno (grass should come up any day now, on day 8 for midnight), and I notice a neighbor across the street has killed off sections of his lawn, I saw him out there using mixed roundup on weeds for the cracks in the sidewalk (I've never seen him do that before, he only started after seeing me do it).

Along my stretch of road it's pretty easy to dominate, no one really gives much attention to their lawn (although one guy has true green come out but he's never done a reno with genetically superior seed).

Yes. My neighbors jokingly say they hate me. Their lawn game has significantly improved. Every single one of them has a better lawn since we moved in.

I hope more neighbors do something because it helps all of us, if at the least they put down a weed killer it can keep the seeds from flying over to our lawn. The worst place for weeds is right by the street, there's always someone on the block who has a lot of weeds there and all those seeds fly through the neighborhood with the help of the wind from the cars.

Absolutely, everyone around me has been doing it and this year with all the rain they are all happy that there’s is close to mine. I always tell them “come talk to me in July”!

I've noticed this phenomena doesn't only work with lawns. Lots of times, new paint, new roof, new garage, etc, will stir up other neighbors to get going on stalled projects.

I wish more of my neighbors put effort into their lawns.

Yes, and the opposite is also true, pile up trash, leave your driveway and other things falling apart and slowly the neighborhood goes south.

All my neighbors went out and bought a hobby car in the last year.

I have a hobby triplex. :D :D

I don't have the premium lawn that many here have, but my next door neighbor commented on the difference between his lawn and mine. I told him that the biggest difference was that he cut his grass a lot shorter than I cut mine.

I noticed that he's letting his grass get longer now. It's also looking a lot better.

Not competition, but a significant increase by at least 3 neighbors trying to improve their lawn and asking questions of what to do. I give them the cliff notes version knowing that they wouldn't be able or want to put in the full time, effort, and education that goes into it.

Ouch.

That would be tough to live next too.
Would he get mad if you mowed it?

I have a neighbor like that, he calls a lawn service to come out when it's overgrown enough. But it's still full of weeds so the poor guy is not even mowing mostly grass

I mow with a 21" push mower. It would explode as soon as I started. My wife had mentioned it and I had even thought about it but its just too far gone now. You need to bring in some heavy artillery to handle that mess. Most of it is well over a foot. I saw a paper on his front door maybe a week ago. Wondering if it was the town posting a blight notice.

Your town may have an ordinance that lawns need to be cut at a certain length. Ours does but they don’t really enforce it.

No owner of any premises shall permit any grass, weeds or similar vegetation not planted as a crop or for ornamental purposes to reach a height greater than eight (8) inches on any premises where a building or dwelling is located thereon or on any vacant lot in an approved and accepted subdivision.

Think he's past the max.

It was the other way around. A neighbor's lawn reno about 10 years ago was one of the things that got me going. But I took it to a whole different level in order to match that, and the end result was more people caring about their lawns. And it shows. But there's still one house on the other side of the street that does absolutely nothing, and their leaves blow into ours all Winter. I hate it because you can't just go out on frozen grass and blow or rake any old time in the Winter. The guy next to them actually put up fencing a few years ago to keep the leaves out of his yard, and there's a huge pile up against it all the time.

This - EXACTLY.

When we moved in several years back, everyone had dandelions and poorly manicured lawns. This year everyone has above average lawns - we have 2 lawns that are not so hot that are on the market. But I'm sure the new owners will get the hint.

Neighbor 1 - was putting out PreM before me this year. I went over to talk to him and he begrudgingly stated that he had to 'keep up with the Joneses' as he stared at my lawn. Nice guy but he always makes backhanded comments about how much extra work I have given him.

Neighbor 2 - next door neighbor - asked me this year what he needed to do to get his lawn to look like mine.

Neighbor 3 - next door neighbor - asked me to take care of his lawn because the previous owner left it a scalped weedy mess.

Neighbor 4 - is starting to feel pressure and has asked me for tips and started mowing 2x a week.

Neighbor 5 - who's yard was never that bad has stepped up his game and is mowing / putting fertilizer on the vacant house lawn next door to his THAT HE DOESNT OWN!

It's nice to drive down our street knowing it is one of the nicest looking and I had something to do with it.

I saw a neighbor call TrueGreen for the first time, so now I know he wants to battle it out. I just happened to go out when the guy showed up because I was watering my new lawn.

Pitting a mass-market vendor against a committed lawn owner is akin to bringing a knife to a gunfight.
