A Cute Little Story

Post by andy10917 » July 5th, 2019, 6:24 pm

I had to make a run to HD this afternoon because I was very low on "Sevin" and the Japanese Beetles are descending like the proverbial plague of locusts. So, I'm standing there comparing dusts and liquids and ingredients and all, and a gentleman in his mid/late 70's asks if I could help him for a moment. I said "I'll try...".

He asked if I knew what might be in the aisle that could kill Poison Ivy. I just started laughing. He asked why I'd laugh at that, and I told him "it's a very long story, and I'm certain you don't want to hear it". I then handed him a bottle of 8% Triclopyr, said "this will work" and walked away shaking my head, but smiling.

I wonder how many times I've typed the word "Triclopyr"...

You must just have that look about you.

P.S. I wish I could give you my excessive stock of Sevin dust and liquid from years past. Haven't touched the stuff since using pheromone traps, which will hopefully go up this weekend. Please use Sevin sparingly and not near anything with blooms. But you're a wise man; you already know that.

I use both the traps and Sevin only on only a non-blooming Contorted Filbert that is their favorite target plant - it behaves like yet another trap.

PS: While I was on the porch setting up the traps (four of them), I had a literal cloud of Japanese Beetles swarming around me, searching for the source of the pheromones.

Ooh, thanks for the heads up. We planted a large 'Red Dragon' contorted filbert late last fall, our first, so I was unaware that Japanese beetles would be making a beeline for that. I might just have to dust off the Sevin dust. We only just started seeing the beetles yesterday.

Oh God! Get that Filbert protected ASAP. The Japanese Beetles will skeletonize the leaves in no time. Here north of NYC, the Japanese Beetles show up between June 28 - 30th every year. If not protected, the Filbert will have 80 -100 beetles on it at all sunny times of the day.

What Japanese beetle traps do you guys use?

My Lowes has the Spectracide ones: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Spectracide-Ba ... ap/3120407

I see Tanglefoot and Safer Brand are popular on Amazon.

Thanks.

Tanglefoot hard shell traps, since we feed the beetles to our chickens, and they don't swing around in the wind as much as the bags do. If you use the bags, drop a small rock in the bag. Far and away, I prefer the non-Expando Tanglefoot traps that no one seems to sell anymore and barely ever did. I don't know why Tanglefoot discontinued those. The materials were far better quality. It would appear that they are still available from a few obscure vendors, e.g. here, under the name Trece, probably the actual manufacturer. The Tanglefoot Expando traps are good as well; just don't exercise the accordion feature or disassemble each season, or they'll only last a few years.

Regardless of the trap you use, always use a dual lure.
