Grass color / type -- odd results?

Post by southern-ct-4 » August 20th, 2019, 12:10 pm

The grass on the left is a mix of KBG (bewitched/blueberry/nuglade), the middle is a gold tag PR blend, and the right is a mix of KBG/PR and I think FF (I think I added the FF but I can't remember).

Any idea why the KBG looks so awful? Does it just take a year or two (as I've seen people mention) before it looks it's best?

This was planted a couple months ago, I don't recall exactly when, and has been hit with 1-2 small doses of Milo.

Yes, it needs to be cut...

I wouldn't say the KB looks awful for two months old. It's tough to judge with such a small sample and time. How much sun has it been getting? And yes, you should cut it and give it more time before judging. The KB mix you have should look very good.

Thanks. It gets a lot of sun. Almost all day after 11 AM.

I was especially surprised how good the PR looks in comparison to the KBG.

You should grow that, if you like it. Frankly, there’s more to KBG than just color. But if you like Rye, you should grow it.

In my experience, KBG has given me better year-round results against heat, disease. It’s got a turf-density that Rye and Tall Fescue can’t come close to touching.

But it takes someone with patience to get it fully established. If you’re just a casual lawn guy, I totally get the attraction of P. Rye.

It sounds like you like Rye. I’d say that’s your best choice.
