Transplanting Plug Pots

Post by mobiledynamics » September 3rd, 2019, 8:36 am

I've got various pots I've had that I've been planting/germinating as I have attain free ~plastic blueberry/strawberry trays LOL) . Some are fairly mature (blades are thick and mature, others are still germinated and still young).

I went ahead and planted the mature blade pot plugs in some empty spots and also overseeded. The other bare patches I overseeded around 10 days ago.

Anyhow, we'll see what takes off or not on the overseed. For the remaining pots I do have, I'm leaning on just transplanting these plugs in early-mid November ? We won't get our 1st hard frost till late early December usually..

Is there any indifference if I transplant them when it's warm or whether when the lawn is dormant. I'm only planning to transplant them in area's where the overseed looks weak by November

Small sample size here but I have transplanted pots in late November and they did fine.

thx. the pot plugs I've still got - some are still new blades (too fine and soil is not knitted/firm in the pot yet) . Probably will end up putting these in -washout areas like the heavy rain we got the other day....

Last year was a super MILD winter. Maybe this is the -new norm-. Went looking at last years weather forcast well into november / December.
My memory ain't as good as it used to be.

Man, 2 weeks into January still looked pretty warm

Interesting how the HEAT just keeps KBG dormant. I've had some pots germinated for awhile - late spring....no green poking through in the pots for almost all of summer. - In the literal sense, once the cooler days/nights came upon, every single pot has decided to send blades up. Here I was adding (more seed) to each pot with peat, thinking I had germinated-heat killed the young seedling !

Looks like I'm going to have to -sipe- the roots when I transplant. While not root bound, they have bottomed out on majority of the pots.

-when I buy shrubs from the nursery, I generally even root wash the medium off-
