Thick lawn = mowing issues

Post by KBGkicksazz » September 15th, 2019, 5:08 pm

I’ve got a dual blade 18.5 Hp lawn tractor with sharp blades. Also have a 21 inch 7.75 Hp Toro recycler.

My lawn has gotten so thick that after 3 days the push mower stalls and bogs down while mulch mowing

My tractor has a mulching kit and sharp gator blades but even mowing at 4 inch I’m leaving so many clumps (yes I’m mowing when dry) that I have to use a backpack blower on the entire lawn to disperse it all.

At this point my only option aside from mowing every single day is a mower with more power and blade speed.

I will not be fertilzing anymore this year. I’m not sure any regular residential lawn mowing equipment could provide a good cut on my lawn.

Looks great! There are worse problems for a lawn! Any fungus problems this year?

Not yet but I applied preventative this year.

Spending 40 minutes blowing all the clumps after each mow is getting old quick and with shorter daylight hours I usually have to mow one day and blow the clippings the next day.

I’m mowing every other day right now. Definitely won’t be adding any more fert this year I need to let the lawn start hardening up for winter. I am getting good spread filling in everything but top growth is brutal now.
I might have to consider a PGR next year.

I just so was reading up on PGR. More reading to do. One thread had a post that suggested it might have surpressed the good stuff, while other stuff like POA took off....
