Post Renovation Care Through Winter

Post by bryankloos » September 26th, 2019, 5:49 am

Hey All,

I hope everyone is enjoying the beginnings of Fall.

I'm almost 4 weeks into my full renovation, and have some basic questions for continued care through the end of the season.

Here is a link to my original soil test and instructions received?

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=25316

The reno has been coming along very nicely. Good germination, good coverage, and things are really starting to look nice (easy to do relative the the mess I'm replacing). Its been almost 4 weeks from seeding and just yesterday I mowed for the first time and applied Scotts Winterguard Fall fert at bag rate.

I plan to apply Calcitic lime at 9lb/k this weekend and will transition the watering schedule back to 3x/week with 0.3" per watering session to get me 1" water per week.

That said, I do see a bunch of weeds just starting to sprout in a few of the more sparse areas.

So, I could use some suggestions for care going through the end of the season.

My questions:

1. Should I apply Tenacity or another selective to kill the new weeds or just wait until the cold gets them?
2. How should I approach fertilizing going forward given the grass is still young?
3. What else should I be thinking about?

All help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Applied the calcitic lime today. 9lb/k.

I’m seeing the weed seedlings continue to germinate given the warm temps here.

How should I handle the baby weeds and what is the best way the fertilize the new grass? I have urea but am weary as to not hurt the new grass.

Any thoughts?

If you have no bare spots and no areas to overseed, and if you are already at mowing height doing with a PreM is helpful to prevent issues next spring.

My first mow was at 3.5. Should I start
Bringing this down?

For PreM in the Fall, what’s best, prodiamine, or dithiopyr?

Should I not worry about the baby weeds sprouting, as I doubt they will reach maturity before frost.

I do have a couple areas that are a little bare still, but I’m doubtful that overseeding them
At this point makes sense?

I think you have a small confusion - those are not Spring or Summer weeds that are left over, and they don't need to fully mature by the end of the year. Instead, it's highly likely that those are "winter weeds", which germinate in September as small weeds, and finish their life cycle next Spring. They won't die with frost or winter, and shouldn't be ignored. This is the main reason many members apply Pre-M's as soon as the Summer nights cool just a tad - it's the signal that Winter Weeds (including Poa Annua) will germinate.

I didn’t think of winter weeds. Again, this is fairly new to me. I core aerated prior to the reno and though maybe i agitates the summer weeds. I’m learning here.

So, assuming these may be winter weeds, or even germinating summer weeds, what is the best course of remedy?

I have tenacity on hand as well as 2-4-D. Would an application be warranted?

I’m assuming I’d these weeds are already sprouting I’m past the time for a Fall Pre-M??

Any more thoughts of Fall PreM?
For that matter, should I think about applying more Nitrogen and if so at what rate? While the grass is 6 weeks I’m hesitant to burn it as it looks so good right now.

Basically I need some advice as to what to do between now and the end of the season given a new Reno.

Thanks all.
