I want to say something to the neighbor..but..

Post by dantis496 » September 27th, 2019, 10:58 am

Hi All,

I have a neighbor, husband and wife, who try to have a nice lawn. There are times I want to give suggestions but don't want to come across as a "lawn snob". The last event is making me want to go over. We are in SE Mass, so first frost is about a month off. 3 days ago, they had local lawn company core aerate and broadcast some seed. They keep their lawn at 1-1.5" all summer. No irrigation. And they haven't water except for once that I know of. Do I tell them their timing is way off, they need to keep it moist, etc. Also, no fert was applied. I don't want to be "that guy", but I hate seeing them waste the $$ for the same ole' lawn....opinions?

Depends on your relationship with them. If you are friendly, it would be ok. But if you barely talk, I’d keep my opinion to myself.

Trust me it’s not worth it. They want the miracle bag solution.

It doesn't sound like they are trying too hard. Mow at 1 inch and never water...

If you see them out doing something, just make a comment about something you or they are doing, or ask them a question about it. A good part of the time, that will spur people to ask questions.

Wait until they ask you how you take care of your lawn so well, then offer short, to the point, simple advice.

Unfortunately many view lawns as a competition so they are reticent to be tutored.

I would just start walking over and talking about general stuff life, kids, football. You need to have a relationship first. Like turf toe said.

Don’t just be like dude your lawn is jacked up....not going to end well.
