Newly Seeded Lawn-Winterize or Not

Post by This is me » October 21st, 2019, 10:07 am

Newly seeded KGB mix lawn about a month ago. I think this is probably all I’ll get since it’s starting to get cold at night with some light frost.
Should I winterize it this year?

Short answer is Yes (unless there are complications)

Agreed...I did it last year on a major late-season overseed. It was the only fertilizer it got in the Fall, if you don't count the starter fertilizer that went down at the (first) seeding. I think it really helped it.

Thanks. Will do.
What to do about the leaves? blow it out, leave it or mulch it? If mulch is it a good idea to drive a 600lbs tractor on it? Given the soil will not be soggy.

Will the growth stoppage for a newly seeded lawn be the same time as an established lawn?

I’d hate to pull the trigger early and get growth that will just be damaged. You think the window is the same?

I was in a similar situation, getting seed down in October of 2017. Search for a thread titled yard graded near frost. The areas that got leaf mulch came in the best on my property. But I used a toro 22” and not a 600lb tractor.

It seems to be about the same, but the new grass tends to stay greener longer into the Winter, if anything.
