Growth Stoppage
Anyone seeing your grass stop yet?
Mine has considerably slowed and I’m going to cut this weekend and start checking it weekly from here on out. Getting cold and freezing temps are on the way, hope that doesn’t impact the last fertilization

Re: Growth Stoppage
I've gotten growth over the past few days. Plan to give it a trim tomorrow afternoon and see where it's at Tuesday before the possible rain/snow rolls in.
I remember last year some snow came and went before I put down the urea. Don't recall if the temps had dipped as low as they're about to though. A couple nights in the teens coming up after the snow.

Re: Growth Stoppage
I have one area that will probably stop in about 2 weeks, as usual. Other areas tend to stop in very late November or early December. I'm normally applying the last app between Thanksgiving and the first week of December.

Re: Growth Stoppage
Do you think that the unusually early cold temps will make it happen faster? I’m definitely go to watch it myself and I’m not looking for a rule or anything - just trying to see if I should expect it sooner this year. Want Mother Nature to water it in because I already blew out the system but I can fire it back up just as easy.

It stops growing when it stops growing. There are no "but what about this" angles.

Re: Growth Stoppage
Grass still growing a bit in north-central Indiana. I mowed/leaf-mulched on 11/3 & 11/10, cutting less than 1" off on 11/10. Cold next 4 days with highs in the 30's and maybe some single digit lows...but 50's next week. May get enough snow tonight to cover the grass, providing some insulation.

Major cold snap coming this week in New England, starting now.....Pretty sure I missed my Urea window of opportunity.
I dumped a little this morning on half the lawn were the dog pees, hoping to grow out some of those spots next year....
All the ski areas are touting their earliest openings in quite a few years......so, there's that.

I live in central Connecticut and last yer I applied Urea on 12/01/18. I still have some very slow growth but temps dropping quick this week but look to bounce back next week so not sure when to apply Urea this year.

I dropped my 2nd fall fertilizer Thursday 11/7.
An hour after I applied it, had a nice rain for the rest of the day.
Like you, I will see in the spring if I got the "window of opportunity" correct.

Re: Growth Stoppage
Makes sense...12/1 has been about the average date for mine as well, over the past 7 or so years. I actually think this year is going to be easier than last...there are less leaves remaining to come down now, and if I had to predict, it will be sometime between Thanksgiving week and the first week of Dec., as usual. Most people don't try to time it as precisely as we do. It will still work if one is a week off of optimal timing...temps stay relatively stable at the soil level. We do the best we can. As long as the ground is not frozen, the grass is no longer needing to be mowed every 10-14 days or so, and there is some rain following the application, it will work optimally.legacy2000 wrote: ↑November 12th, 2019, 2:51 pmI live in central Connecticut and last yer I applied Urea on 12/01/18. Re: Growth Stoppage
So I cut last weekend and had some growth. The stopped this week and I wasn't showing any growth, so Urea went down. Interesting, last year it went down on Nov 20th, so about the same time.

Re: Growth Stoppage
I'm still new to predicting when growth stops. Lately, even during the warmest part of the day, the grass is still crunchy and leaves foot prints so I'm not inclined to take the lawn tractor out and check my bag. I suppose I'll have to though.
Last 10 days:
- highs: 34,39,37,43,32,25,37,50,34,37
- lows: 24,19,33,31,19,14,21,32,21,17
Upcoming 10 days:
- highs: 38,41,39,45,46,40,41,45,46,47
- lows: 32,31,28,36,27,31,29,27,33,39
It's been cold recently but there appears to be a warm up coming. I was thinking about dropping my last urea tonight since we've got rain coming but I think I'll hold off for now. I don't want to miss the natural watering-in but I'd rather be late than early.

Re: Growth Stoppage
Yeah, best to check the grass to make sure it's not frozen solid before you attempt to walk all over or worse, mow. Yesterday, I kept on waiting for the temps to go up, but they were stuck at 36, and I needed to put fertilizer on the first two areas. Luckily, I was able to do it, but if it had been a little colder, it would have been too cold. There was a little bit of ice in one of the areas, but it doesn't matter since I'm redoing it in the Spring anyway and it's already half bare.
Sometimes there's still frost left in low, shaded areas after the temps have risen to 38 or occasionally even 40.
One year, I winterized about a week early due to snow being predicted I think. It worked just fine and didn't cause any issues.

Re: Growth Stoppage
Well, despite the upper back lawn having stopped growing over a week ago, when I mowed the lower back today in the same direction as the previous mowing (after 13 days) I got a fair amount of clippings in the bag along with the leaves. So, other areas have not stopped growing just yet. My definition of stopped is basically no or almost no clippings in the bag after 10-14 days (mowing in the same direction as the previous time).

Mowed yesterday and didn't notice any growth in a week so winterizer went down and my season is complete!

Re: Growth Stoppage
Same here, mowed Wednesday to no clippings, urea going down before the snow, ground is getting close to freezing but temps will rebound a bit next week
