0.08% other crop

Post by spectrum1c » November 30th, 2019, 6:19 pm

I just bought 50lb of FireCracker TTF from United Seed as they were having a sale. A few months ago I picked up "Titanium 2LS" TTF, which arrived blue tag with 0% "other crop" and 0% Weed. This go around, I chose the "FireCracker SLS" from their sod farm category. I was thinking it would be gold tag since it was listed under sod farm. To my surprise, it does not have a blue or gold tag and shows 0.08% "other crop", though also 0% weed.

Should I be concerned?

Other crop could contain Poa Triv.

Thanks for the reply turf_toes.
From my research, it looks like I may be safe from Poa as "other crop" tend to be seeds of similar size to the desired seed. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that since Poa is much smaller than TTF, so I should be ok. Having said that, I'm assuming there are other possible nasties from "other crop" in TTF

I looked up the oregon criteria for blue tag certified and it looks like my FireCracker does fall within the limits (less than 0.10% other crop).
https://www.oregon.gov/ODA/programs/Mar ... ation.aspx

I'm not sure why it didn't carry a blue tag

I also found this topic has been addressed before viewtopic.php?t=24391

Hopefully I will be Ok, especially as this seed will predominantly be used for over-seeding.

Blue Tag has nothing to do with Weed/Other Crop really, other than basic quality controls. Blue Tag certifies that what is in the label is what's in the bag. There are limits that no other cultivar was grown in that acreage for a pretty long period, etc.

"Other Crop" is a designation for things that aren't weeds, but that are other sort of marketable grasses. Poa Trivialis is grown for shady areas, so it is not a weed, it is in the "other crop" category. That doesn't mean that in your lawn you may or may not find it a nightmare.

Thanks for the explanation Andy. I have learned so much from everyone on this site and with my increased knowledge am looking forward to the next growing season.
