Seed calculation between types

Post by Wally » March 24th, 2020, 11:04 am

How much KBG would one use per 1000sf if the mix was Fescue 90 KBG 10? Lets say 8 lbs of fescue?

Anyone ever come across a mixture calculator?

KBG typically gets seeded at 2-to-3 pounds per thousand square feet. Tall Fescue is about 10 pounds per thousand (if I recall correctly.

Figure out the total area. Then do the basic math to arrive at 10 percent for KBG and 90 percent for Tall fescue.

That’s assuming you want 10 percent by weight.

As I know that you know, KBG seed is smaller. So if you are thinking10 percent by percentage of seed, it’s a different calculation. I’d search the forum. This issue has been discussed in multiple threads.

So if I were to buy a blend that contains 10% kbg, that 10% would be by the application rate, not the total weight of the bag. Am I correct on that?

I’d suggest asking the vendor where you are buying the seed

The formula for this is as follows

Wa = Xa [z(Ya)]

Where Wa= amount of first cultivar needed in lbs
Wb= amount of second cultivar needed in lbs
You may add as many of these as needed
z= total sq ft of lawn to be sown
Xa= spread rate of first cultivar
Xb= spread rate of second cultivar
You may add as many of these as necessary
Ya= % of first cultivar in mixture
Yb= % of second cultivar
Again, add as many as you need

Ex: You want to sow an area of 10k sq ft with a mix of 75% tttf and 25% kbg.

Wa = 9/1,000 [10,000(.75)]
= [9(7500)]/1000
= 67500/1000

= 67.5lbs of tttf

Wb = Xb [z(Yb)]
= 2.5/1000 [10000(.25)]
= 2.5(2500)/1000
= 6250/1000

= 6.25lbs of kbg
So a 73 pound bag of 75% tttf and 25% kbg would have around 67 and 6 pounds respectively.
