POA Triv or something nightmare
Completed lawn renovation a few years back using Logan TTTF/KGB blend. Overall fairly pleased with the results. However, this year has been a nightmare with a weed explosion. Last year I noticed small patches what I believe now was of POA Triv, but thought it was an annual and completed ignored it which obviously was a huge mistake.
Please see pics, I believe pic #1 and #2 are patches of POA Triv but what really puzzles me is the fact it's basically popping up in areas that receive full sun. I thought POA Triv only prominent in shady areas? Any idea what weed is in pic #3

Re: POA Triv or something nightmare
The seed heads in the last photo indicate POA Annua.
Not sure, but triv will do OK in full sun in the spring, it just cooks faster in the summer. If sun prevented POA Triv it wouldn't be such a big nuisance in everyones lawn.

Pic 3 definitely looks like Triv to me. It seems too stalky to be annua. Also Triv will grow in sunny areas.

I disagree - I have never seen Poa Triv that upright or wide.

Re: POA Triv or something nightmare
POA Annua seed heads are tricky. The main POA Annua plant can be the next bunch over, usually there are a few seed heads going off in multiple directions.I seldom pull a POA Seedhead where it goes directly right down to the roots.
So those POA Annua seed heads, might not be in that same bunch. Just because you see a POA Annua seed head, I wouldn't go spray round up on that clump, that may not be the POA Annua main plant.

3rd pic looks like quackgrass to me. I isolate them individually and paint them with glysophate. Did some today actually.
Triv and annua are bad this year from what I can see

Re: POA Triv or something nightmare
Pic #3 is most definitely Poa trivialis. Most of mine (now everywhere) is in full sun, but I'm notably north in zone 5b/6a.
This is the time of season that gives Poa trivialis the common name "roughstalk bluegrass". We've been through this same argument and disagreement before and concluded that stalky purple in May is indeed triv. It simply looks different at different times of the year.

Doesn't look like Annua or Triv. Quack has distinctive clasping auricles. No matter what specifically, grassy weeds get painted with round-up, dug up, or pulled in my lawn.

Re: POA Triv or something nightmare
Following this thread had me second guessing all kind of stuff in my lawn, my KBG is recovering from a bad summer, but even the small plants that just greened up are sending out KBG seedheads. The stalky stalks are everywhere and I swear some of it looked purple and like triv after reading this thread.
Then I read a little more and in my case the KBG is just sending its seed heads out and is very stalky, Im not sure what TTTF does, but maybe its just the time of the year. I can tell POA Annua vs KBG most of the time now, and my KBG is in full on seed mode and sending all kind of strange shoots I never remember seeing before.
I really need those rhizomes to spread out and fill in gaps, so disappointed about the lack of top growth, but happy the law is healthy enough to be sending seed heads every wear.

Lime Green, grows faster in spring, nuke from space. I just did a 2nd app of Tenacity on the white grass, its everwhere. If your lawn borders field, woods, etc its a constant battle.

Re: POA Triv or something nightmare
I am glad to see I am not alone....At times I feel like i'm going backwards. I see these photos of these lawns ans ask"why can't I get that, I put in the time and effort"...KBG definitely slow to start growing this year allowing the lime green to shine thru...ugh..

Re: POA Triv or something nightmare
Digging it out with a wide parameter around the triv is your best bet. Killing it in the spring with glysophate is your 2nd best option.
Even with that, I’d suggest digging it out and replacing the soil (in case you have dormant triv seed in your soil.
