BSFertilizer and other fertz

Post by s1mpl3k1d » August 2nd, 2020, 10:09 pm

I was reading different threads today and saw mentions of BSF. I searched our entire forum and found it's mentioned many many times. Why is it famous or why is it being used instead of Scotts or Milorganite? Why do you use it? Can BSF be bought at Lowes, HD or Menards? Googled it and looks like it's origin is from MA. Not sure if there are stores in my area that sells it.

It's Bay State Fertilizer. Comparable to milorganite but from mass.

Got it. I reached out to them and asked if they are selling it here in Illinois. Their response was no and I was told to use milorganite. LOL.

Lol. It’s $3.50 a bag that’s why it’s got some buzz!

Unfortunately, with COVID and limited contact with people BSF is only selling 50 bags or greater at the plant. And must be pre-paid and pre-arranged. For less than 50 bags, they are selling through a local nursery, at double the price...which is still much less than Milo...

Didn’t know that but I buy a pallet at a time anyway. I’ll be looking for an application window next week as I start to wake the lawn up. We need rain up my way and now it looks like this storm is going to miss us....sigh

So I'm still confused why they won't sell it me or was it because I live in Illinois?

Well they really only sell locally and outside of buying it directly at the MWRA I’ve seen it sold through some very local Ace Hardware stores but there isn’t a wide distribution at all.

If you wanna drive then sure but Illinois probably disqualifies you a bit :)

Love it for the price. Before I was alternating applications of BSF and urea to save in cost and the 3 hour round trip to pick it up (I would pick up about 20 bags when I was in the Boston area for other purposes). Now with the 50bag plus requirement, I'll rent a trailer and just go with straight BSF. It will still work out to be a bargain.
These fertilizers are not perfect though. BSF, milorganite, and ocean state have concerns for PFOS. Not sure about the significance to the environment though at the levels a homeowner would use.

Oops, I meant PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl substances), not PFOS.

With the amounts we're using, I wouldn't be too concerned even if I were on a well. Because if you have that well tested, it'll probably test positive already anyway.
