46-0-0 Urea

Post by Paul » August 13th, 2020, 8:35 am

So I just purchased a bag of 46-0-0 Urea and would only like to apply 0.5lbs of N/1Ksqft starting in September and applying weekly. With my lawn being 12,000 Sqft, I would only be applying 12 pounds. Question - Only applying 12 pounds would be difficult to apply uniformly, so how do other people apply Urea to make sure it is spread evenly? Should I mix with something else to make sure it gets applied uniformly? I was thinking of mixing it with my grub killer which I usually apply the beginning of September as well. I could also mix with Milorginate to act as a filler.

This will be the first time I'm applying Urea.

Just set spreader at lowest setting and spread at different directions until it's gone.

You’ll need to adjust the speed you push the spreader. Also the prill-size of the urea matters.

Summing up, there’s no single answer that will apply to your specific situation

Another option is to mix it with Milo or BSF. I used to mix about 5lbs of Milo with a 1lb of Urea for 1,000sf. I realize you should not mix an organic fertilizer with a synthetic one when you spoon feed, but this makes it easier to spread and the 5lbs of milo is really a tiny amount.

I kind of gave up on the above when I realized it was just easier tossing it out by hand. Think hand broadcasting grass seed. There is a tendency to over apply when doing it by hand, but i haven't had issues as long as I weigh it out out first. ill always end up going back for more to get better coverage, but probably are with in 25% of the proper amount when doing it by hand.

I try to remember its not about total coverage if your applying once a week for 6 weeks. If you miss a spot one week, you will probably hit it the next week. In 6 weeks you will eventually get everything.

Actually, that's just fine. You're simply mixing carrots with the meat when you feed it to the lawn, and there's nothing wrong with sneaking in a little veg with the proteins if it makes your life a little easier.

Hi All,

I am going to try this "aggressive: Urea approach this year, now that last year's overseed looks pretty good despite the heat. I too plan on 0.5lb N/1k, whichj would mean I set my Spyker spreader to be 1 lb of 46-0-0 per 1k correct?

I haven't been doing the fall "aggressive" feeding, but I use 46-0-0 for the winterizer. And for that I use a Wizz spreader. I fill it up for 2K at a time (I put the wizz on scale and tare it out), and walk in both directions. I've gone thru a couple of them in 4 years, they are like bic lighters.

For the stuff I get, the prill sometimes gets stuck the hopper shutter, and keeps it open...
