This weed doesn't get killed by Tenacity nor Weed B Gone

Post by s1mpl3k1d » September 10th, 2020, 1:56 am

This weed is spreading a lot and has taken over the area where the kbg lawn died. I'm losing against this weed 😥
What is this weed and how do I kill it? It's not purslane because the leaves are a little pointy.

You can always go more selective on your herbicide use, for The splurge u have pictured.

I agree with the ID, but the spelling is off a bit, if you want to research it. It's called "Spurge".

Spurge is often confused with Purslane - one has fat stems and succulent leaves (sort of like Jade leaves), the other has much narrower stems and leves that are pointier. Mature Spurge can be difficult to kill.

Make sure you are getting good coverage with your PreM as spurge is an annual.

Sulfentrazone (Dismiss) will wipe out spurge.

Thank you! I'll look for that product. I have a Prodiamine 65 WDG. When should I spray it?

Spurge is a spring-sprouting annual, so spray pre-em when the forsythia sprouts (when soil temps start to warm over fifty or so).

It's also usually got a heck of a taproot, so pulling it is...less than helpful in most cases. Painting it with RoundUp, however, works. I get spotted spurge in the gardens. The stuff is just awful, but a bit of RU and zap. Gone.

Got it. I've already removed about about 15-25sqft of it 😥I still have this left and I gave up! There's also more on the right side of the image. Far back is also spurge, used to be lawn. I have no idea why lawn died last year or 2.

I went outside to analyze my backyard lawn. Backyard is 60ft wide. 30ft on west side, I'm starting to see blades growing but not a lot. However, on the right side(the pic shown on previous comment), no signs of life. Blades are crunchy too. I'm starting to lose hope because all my neighbor's lawns now are green. I may need to reseed. I honestly feel like switching to a different type of grass, something that is more drought tolerant. I'm really shocked because I never see my neighbor water his lawn. He just mows it. Maybe, I might have applied something though I only have Tenacity and Prodiamine. I only sprayed it around May. My lawn even looked good until first week of July I guess. The SLS+Kelp was just recent and lawn was already brown.

Which is weird because bluegrass is the most drought-tolerant of the grasses (other than things like blue grama and the like which aren't, strictly-speaking, in the running).
Here I am, never irrigating, and I'm looking out at a rich green lawn once again amongst neighbors whose lawns look like crap. It went to sleep, it woke up, it resumed normal activities. I didn't worry about it.
The garden actually looked awful this year just due to the heat and bad weather.

It does depend on the age of the lawn. First-year lawns don't survive droughts well, they're not established. But established bluegrasses are pretty much bulletproof in terms of dry weather. It's fescue and rye that will drop and not return (except for K-31, which will probably survive a direct nuclear strike).

We'll see find out in few more weeks. If it doesn't end well, I'll do this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fQ7K-DA2nk
I'm buying it tonight at Home Depot. I hope they are selling a product similar to this.

I think my backyard is midnight ii and emblem. I couldn't recall anymore.

Mine's Midnight II, Moonlight, and Bedazzled, with some others tossed in later. But mostly those three, and about--oh, ten years old at this point.

Thing being, both of ours are established. :-)

Mine too, lawn is 10 years old. I went outside again to calculate how much plugs I'll have to make if I go that route. Dead grass(if it is dead) is about 80%) and 20% of grass is 50/50. 😲
