KBG Seed Question : Any difference in Regular Turf vs Forage Types
Hello,
We came across this bag of KBG seeds with an interesting label.
A cursory search found that this in sold in Agricultural Coops with this caption.
Also was unaware that KBG is also considered to be a highly palatable pasture grass.
So, if the seed type is the same (here KBG), are the seeds for pasture/forage are the same as the ones for Turf/Lawn?

This is an interesting question to me as well. I have some friends that own a hardware store, they are selling a KBG named Balin that came from Denmark. Supposedly it is the most popular KBG in Europe. I checked it out and most references are as a pasture grass, but some info says its good for lawns and sports fields.

No. They could be in the same family. But some types/cultivars are bred for different purposes.
Are all dogs the same?

Typically, forage grasses do not go through the same controls and testing as grasses that are are intended for residential use. And they are grown for how they tolerate intensive grazing, not for dense growth and disease resistance.
In the typical 10,000 sq ft lawn, you might save $15, but you'll have a lower genetic bar as to just how good the grass can get. If you get a bunch of weeds in the seed because that's OK in a pasture, you'll spend the $15 in one single herbicide treatment. Remember, the grass seed you buy sets the bar for what you'll live with for potentially a couple of decades. You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear.
